On Monday, Manchester United surged into the Premier League top six with a resounding 4-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, fueled by an outstanding display from Bruno Fernandes. The midfielder netted two goals and assisted another, proving pivotal for the team.
Fernandes scored early in the match, setting the pace for United, but Wolves' Jean-Ricner Bellegarde equalized just before the break. The second half saw Wolves’ Bryan Mbeumo equalize briefly, only for United to wrest back control. Mason Mount was clinical in adding a third goal in the 62nd minute, before Fernandes secured the win with an 82nd-minute penalty.
This loss marked Wolves' eighth straight defeat, leaving them at the bottom of the table with only two points, significantly trailing Burnley. Meanwhile, United climbed to 25 points, level with fifth-place Chelsea.
Wolves' manager Rob Edwards expressed frustration over his team's errors: “We got back into the game, but the goals we let in made it tough to earn anything. We’re being punished for our mistakes and need to improve consistently.”
United capitalized on Wolves' early mishaps, particularly a lost ball from Andre that led to Fernandes’ opener, a shot that goalkeeper Sam Johnstone couldn’t control. While Wolves found their first league goal since October with Bellegarde’s volley, United’s performance in the second half was relentless.
Mbeumo’s neat counter-attack briefly gave Wolves’ hope, but Mount and Fernandes quickly turned the tide. Mount scored after a clever assist from Fernandes, who rounded off the match with a penalty, showcasing United’s dominance.
Reflecting on the match, Mount stated, “We had numerous chances in the first half but were careless. The manager talked to us during halftime, and we came out focused. We must remain ruthless and keep taking our opportunities. Getting three points is vital, but we must push on.”
The victory underlines United’s attacking prowess while pointing to Wolves’ ongoing struggles as the Premier League battle intensifies.
