Mango Projects Boost Food Security & Farming in South Al Batinah

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Mango cultivation and production projects in the wilayats of Barka and Al Musanaah in South Al Batinah Governorate are important initiatives for Oman. These projects help increase local food production, strengthen food security, provide good investment opportunities, and reduce the country’s reliance on imported mangoes. By growing more mangoes locally, Oman can meet local demand and even explore exporting to foreign markets, improving the competitiveness of Omani products regionally and globally.

Part of a Larger Food Security Program

These mango projects are part of over 80 initiatives within the food security portfolio in South Al Batinah Governorate. The projects cover a wide range of agricultural products and span large areas across different wilayats. Each project aims to contribute to national food security, improve local production, and encourage sustainable farming practices that use available natural resources efficiently.

Supervision and Support from Agriculture Authorities

The projects are closely supervised and followed up by the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in South Al Batinah Governorate. The authorities monitor progress to overcome difficulties, solve challenges, and make sure work continues according to planned schedules. This careful oversight ensures that the projects are successful and productive from planting to harvesting.

Scale of Mango Planting Projects

The mango projects in Barka and Al Musanaah aim to plant more than 35,000 mango seedlings of different varieties across an area of 373 acres. Planting will be done in separate batches to ensure high success rates and healthy growth of the trees. Once the projects are fully developed and commercial production begins, the expected annual production capacity will reach around 3,382 tons of mangoes, which will significantly support both local consumption and export potential.

Statement from the Director General

Eng. Amer Humood Al Shebli, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in South Al Batinah, explained that these mango projects are part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to diversify agricultural production and strengthen national food security. He emphasized that the projects make the best use of natural resources and apply modern farming techniques to ensure sustainable and high-quality production. This approach helps farmers maximize output while maintaining environmental sustainability.

Future Plans for Mango Cultivation

In the next phase, the Ministry plans to introduce new mango varieties that are known for their high quality and excellent productivity. This will allow farmers to grow mangoes that meet local and international market standards. In addition, the Ministry is focusing on research and development programs to improve production methods and efficiency. Training programs will be offered to farmers and workers to enhance their skills and ensure they can apply modern techniques effectively.

Marketing and Sales Strategies

The Ministry is also paying attention to marketing the mango projects. It aims to create diverse channels for selling mangoes, both in local markets and through agricultural exhibitions and events. By improving marketing opportunities, the Ministry ensures that the projects are sustainable in the long term and that farmers can benefit from higher incomes. These marketing efforts also help promote Omani mangoes to regional and international buyers, increasing export potential.

Importance for Food Security and Economy

These mango projects play an important role in strengthening Oman’s food security. By producing more mangoes locally, Oman reduces dependency on imports and secures a steady supply of this fruit for its population. In addition, the projects create jobs and investment opportunities in the agricultural sector, supporting economic growth in South Al Batinah and beyond. The projects also promote the use of modern farming practices, which can be applied to other crops and farming initiatives.

Environmental and Sustainable Practices

The mango projects emphasize sustainability and careful use of natural resources. Modern farming methods are being used to ensure that water, soil, and other resources are used efficiently. This helps protect the environment while increasing productivity. Sustainable farming practices also ensure that the projects can continue producing high-quality mangoes over many years without harming the land or natural ecosystem.

Long-Term Vision

The overall goal of these projects is to make South Al Batinah a hub for mango cultivation and a model for sustainable agriculture in Oman. By planting new varieties, improving production techniques, and offering farmer training, the Ministry hopes to achieve high productivity, improve local food security, and create strong export opportunities. These initiatives also strengthen the economic position of farmers and contribute to Oman’s broader agricultural development strategy.

Supporting Farmers and Local Communities

Through training, research, and marketing support, the mango projects provide valuable help to local farmers. They learn how to grow mangoes more efficiently, manage their farms better, and increase production quality. Communities also benefit from the increased economic activity created by these projects. By combining modern technology, sustainable practices, and proper planning, the projects create a positive impact on both farmers’ livelihoods and the local economy.

Mango cultivation and production projects in Barka and Al Musanaah are vital for Oman’s food security, agricultural development, and economic growth. By planting over 35,000 seedlings, introducing new varieties, using sustainable farming practices, and providing training and marketing support, the projects ensure high-quality production and long-term success. They also create opportunities for exports, investment, and local employment, making them a key initiative for South Al Batinah Governorate and the country as a whole.
