England fast bowler Mark Wood is uncertain to play in the third Ashes Test in Adelaide due to a knee injury. Wood had to sit out the second Test at the Gabba in Brisbane after feeling discomfort following Australia’s eight-wicket win in the opening match in Perth.
On day one of the Gabba Test, Wood wore a knee brace, showing that he is not fully fit. He told Australian broadcaster Seven Network that his return for Adelaide is doubtful and it is more likely that he may come back for the fourth Test in Melbourne from December 26, or even the fifth Test in Sydney.
“I think there’s a chance there (for Adelaide), but more realistically, it’s probably Melbourne and then Sydney after that,” Wood said. “I need to get out of this brace first to get moving around properly.”
With Wood unavailable, England added spin-bowling all-rounder Will Jacks to the team for the Gabba Test, keeping the rest of the squad unchanged. Wood’s absence is a setback for England’s pace attack, which is crucial against Australia’s strong batting line-up.
England currently trails 1-0 in the five-Test series, adding pressure to the team to adjust their bowling strategy. Wood’s pace and experience were expected to play an important role in the remaining matches, making his recovery vital for England’s chances.
The team is monitoring Wood’s rehabilitation carefully, ensuring he does not return too soon and risk further injury. His recovery plan focuses on allowing him to regain full mobility and maintain fitness for the remaining Ashes matches.
Other bowlers now have the chance to step up in Wood’s absence. His speed and match experience are hard to replace, but England is adjusting tactics to deal with the missing fast bowling strength.
Fans and the team remain hopeful that Wood will return in Melbourne or Sydney. Meanwhile, England is preparing to face Australia without one of its senior fast bowlers, which may affect their plans and overall performance.
Managing injuries and squad changes will be critical as the Ashes series progresses. England must balance recovery timelines with competitive needs to have a strong chance in the upcoming Tests.
