In a remarkable display of cricket, South Africa defeated India in the opening Test of the series held in Kolkata. Chasing an improbable 549 runs, India were all out for just 140 on the final day. Only Ravindra Jadeja showed resistance, scoring 54 runs, while the rest of the batting lineup struggled to cope with the disciplined South African bowling attack.
Aiden Markram of South Africa had an extraordinary match, taking a record nine catches. His performance was instrumental in dismantling India’s batting order and securing a comprehensive win for the reigning world Test champions. After the match, Markram expressed his pride, saying, “As a group, you have to believe that you can compete against the best in their backyard. I am bloody proud of the team.”
India began the final day in a difficult situation after losing both openers on the previous day. The team needed to bat through three sessions to save the match. Early struggles from the overnight batters did little to inspire confidence. Sai Sudharsan managed 14 runs and got a life when bowler Marco Jansen overstepped, but India continued to falter. Kuldeep Yadav scored only five runs and was briefly saved by a dropped catch from Markram, a rare lapse in his otherwise flawless fielding.
Bowler Harmer played a key role, taking two wickets in one over by dismissing Kuldeep Yadav and Dhruv Jurel. India’s stand-in captain, Rishabh Pant, tried to attack spinner Keshav Maharaj by hitting a four and a six, but his effort was short-lived. Markram soon took another catch to remove Pant, who edged a delivery to the gully region.
Spinner Senuran Muthusamy ended Sudharsan’s 139-ball innings, and the remaining slim hopes for India to save the match faded when Jadeja was stumped by Maharaj. India’s batting collapses at critical moments allowed South Africa to claim victory inside just three days.
The South African team’s performance was dominant in both batting and fielding, and Harmer’s tally of 17 wickets earned him the player-of-the-series award. The match highlighted South Africa’s skill in both discipline and strategy while India struggled to cope under pressure, despite individual resistance from Jadeja and brief contributions from Sudharsan.
This victory sets the tone for the series, with South Africa showing strong potential to continue their dominance, while India will need to regroup and adjust their strategy for the remaining matches to stay competitive.
