Japanese Golf Icon Masashi 'Jumbo' Ozaki Passes Away at 78

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Masashi “Jumbo” Ozaki, heralded as the most accomplished golfer from Japan, has passed away at 78 following a battle with colon cancer, as reported by the Japan Golf Tour on Wednesday. His impressive career not only showcased his strength and charisma but also cemented his reputation as a transformative figure in Japanese golf.

With a remarkable tally of 113 professional wins across the globe, Ozaki stands as the all-time leader among Japanese golfers. Notably, 94 of these victories were achieved on the Japan Golf Tour, where he reigned supreme for nearly thirty years. His last triumph came in 2002 at the ANA Open when he was 55, highlighting both his enduring talent and tenacity.

Known for his dynamic style and powerful hitting, Ozaki's influence transcended mere statistics. In a nation that embraced golf as a cultural phenomenon, he emerged as its most celebrated ambassador—embodying a spirit of aspiration and excellence.

In a notable highlight of his career, Ozaki reached No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking in 1996 at the age of 49, a testament to his consistent high-level performance. While he predominantly won on his home turf, his single international victory was the New Zealand PGA Championship. His legendary contributions were formally recognized with his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011.

“He is an irreplaceable figure in the discussion of men’s golf now and into the future,” the Japan Golf Tour honored him in a heartfelt social media tribute.

Over his career, Ozaki entered 49 major championships, achieving his best result in the 1989 U.S. Open where he secured second place, just three strokes behind Curtis Strange. He participated in the Masters Tournament 19 times, with his last appearance at the age of 53 in 2000, finishing tied for 28th.

Within Japan, his supremacy was unmatched; Ozaki claimed the Japan Open five times and the Japan PGA Championship six times. He topped the Japan Golf Tour money list a record 12 times, including an extraordinary five consecutive years from 1994 to 1998, with his final money title also coming in 2002, marking an illustrious career.

Ozaki's impact is felt in the younger generations of golfers, including Hall of Famer Isao Aoki and Hideki Matsuyama, who became Japan's first major champion at the 2021 Masters—both drawing inspiration from Ozaki's legacy.

Often likened to Arnold Palmer for his charm, Ozaki also stood out for his fashion sense, frequently donning silk shirts and relaxed trousers. He embraced his status as a celebrity and was known to play guitar, even charting three hits on Japan’s pop charts, a unique facet acknowledged by the Hall of Fame.

Before dedicating his life to golf, Ozaki was a professional baseball pitcher for three years. His early experience in sports informed his approach to golf, with rising star Ryo Ishikawa recalling how Ozaki advised him on how to integrate baseball mechanics into a golf swing, encouraging distance hitting.

Ozaki also brought a personal touch when competing overseas. During major events, he typically traveled with a sizable entourage, rented accommodations, and arranged for a sushi chef to ensure an authentic experience for his team.

In team formats, Ozaki represented the International side during the Presidents Cup in 1996, partnering with Vijay Singh to defeat the American duo of Fred Couples and Davis Love III. He also qualified in 1998 but chose to stay home, allowing his younger brother Naomichi Ozaki to take his spot. Another brother, Tateo Ozaki, enjoyed his own success on tour.

Reflecting on his Hall of Fame accolade, Ozaki expressed regret about not competing more internationally but conveyed immense pride in his contributions to golf in Japan. “I dedicated my life to Japanese golf,” he remarked, expressing gratitude for the recognition.

Masashi “Jumbo” Ozaki fundamentally altered the landscape of golf in Japan. While his records may eventually be surpassed, his status as the sport’s emblematic figure in the country remains unchallenged.
