In a significant meeting held on Friday in Seoul, Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank Group and a prominent figure in technology, engaged with President Lee Jae Myung to explore South Korea's position in the swiftly advancing realm of artificial intelligence. Their discussions highlighted the country's intent to embed AI as an essential component of public infrastructure, benefiting every resident.
Prioritizing AI Development
President Lee articulated the necessity of weaving AI into the fabric of South Korea's basic infrastructure, equating its importance to traditional utilities like water and roads. He remarked, "The remarkable potential of AI should be available to all individuals, promoting responsible use among all nations." President Lee further encouraged Son to serve as a liaison between South Korea and Japan, bolstering regional AI partnerships.
Vision for Superintelligent AI
Son presented his views on artificial superintelligence (ASI), cautioning that while current advancements are directed toward achieving human-level AI, the forthcoming iteration will eclipse human cognitive abilities. "ChatGPT 5.1 already excels in doctoral-level assessments across disciplines such as medicine and physics," Son noted, asserting that ASI could possess intelligence up to 10,000 times that of humans, drawing a comparison reminiscent of how humans perceive a goldfish's limited understanding.
He urged a transformative perspective: rather than exerting control over AI, humans should aim for a reciprocal existence. “In the ASI era, AI will possess the capability to treat humans well and enhance their happiness,” he remarked, likening this relationship to that of humans and their pets.
Key Strategic Areas for Korea
Throughout their dialogue, Son pinpointed four vital areas necessary for cultivating a thriving ASI environment: energy resources, semiconductor development, data management, and educational initiatives. He lauded South Korea's semiconductor sector as a pivotal element in reinforcing the "memory alliance" with the United States, while advocating for the establishment of expanded data centers and efficient energy systems to meet impending AI needs, alongside prioritizing AI-centric educational investments.
Advancing Korea’s AI Framework
In the wake of this dialogue, South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy formalized an agreement with Arm, a prominent chip designer supported by SoftBank, to bolster the country's AI semiconductor capabilities. Plans have been set in motion for the development of a specialized "Arm School" aimed at training approximately 1,400 global design specialists, reinforcing Korea’s commitment to spearheading AI innovation in the long run.
This meeting, which emanated from Son's earlier outreach during the APEC summit, convened prominent officials and industry leaders, including Rene Haas, CEO of Arm, and various South Korean ministers overseeing scientific, industrial, and national AI policy.
