A ferry named KM Barcelona 5 caught fire while sailing near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The fire created a very dangerous and scary situation for all the people on board. Many passengers had to jump into the sea to save themselves from the fire. It was a terrifying moment that ended in tragedy for some.

Three People Lost Their Lives

Sadly, three people died during the incident. Even though many were rescued, not everyone could be saved. The cause of their deaths has not been officially shared, but they were among the many who were on the ferry when the fire broke out.

Ferry Was Headed to Manado City

The ferry had started its journey from Melonguane port, located in the Talaud Islands district, and was traveling towards the city of Manado, which is the capital of North Sulawesi province. Everything was normal until the fire started during the trip.

Fire Started at the Back of the Ferry

The fire began at the stern, or back part of the ferry. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown. When passengers saw smoke and flames, panic broke out, and many people started screaming and running. Some jumped into the sea without thinking.

Hundreds Jumped Overboard in Fear

Due to fear and confusion, many passengers jumped overboard. Some of them didn’t know how to swim but still jumped to escape the fire. People were shouting, crying, and holding onto floating objects while waiting to be rescued.

Quick Response from Rescue Teams

The Indonesian government acted fast. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) confirmed on Monday that at least 568 people were rescued. This quick action saved many lives.

Large Rescue Operation Was Launched

A big rescue operation was organized. One coastguard ship, six rescue vessels, and several inflatable boats were sent to save passengers. The team worked quickly to reach those who had jumped into the sea or were stuck on the ferry.

Fire Was Controlled Within an Hour

According to Franky Pasuna Sihombing, the head of the Manado navy base, the fire was extinguished in about one hour. The rescue operation took place while the fire was still burning. The team worked hard to prevent the situation from getting worse.

Cause of Fire Still Under Investigation

The authorities have not yet confirmed how the fire started. Investigators are now checking the ferry, especially the stern where the fire began. They will try to find out if the fire was caused by a technical problem or by human error.

Ferry Accidents Are Common in Indonesia

Ferry travel is very popular in Indonesia because the country has thousands of islands. But ferry accidents happen quite often due to poor safety rules, overcrowding, or old equipment. This makes many people worry about safety while traveling by sea.

Survivors Describe Their Fear

People who survived the fire said it was the scariest moment of their lives. One survivor said, “I saw the smoke, and then the fire. People were shouting. I jumped into the water without knowing what would happen.” Another person said, “I prayed the whole time.”

Rescue Workers Faced Difficult Conditions

The rescue workers said the situation was hard. There were so many people to save, and the fire made things worse. Many passengers were floating in the sea, tired and cold, and had to be lifted one by one into the rescue boats.

Medical Help Was Given Immediately

After the rescue, medical teams checked the rescued passengers. They gave them blankets, food, and water. People with minor injuries were treated at the rescue site, and some were taken to hospitals nearby for more help.

Support for Victims and Families

The local government promised to support the families of the people who died and help the rescued passengers. They are offering shelter, food, and basic care to those who lost everything in the fire.

Safety on Ferries Now Under Review

The government also said they will re-check all safety rules for ferries in the region. They want to improve ferry safety so that something like this does not happen again in the future.

Investigators Checking for Mistakes

An investigation has started. Authorities are checking if the ferry was overloaded or if there were any maintenance issues. If someone is found responsible for the fire, they may face legal action.

Ferry Crew Being Questioned

The crew members of KM Barcelona 5 are also being questioned. Officials want to know what they saw and did when the fire started. Did they follow the safety steps? Were fire extinguishers available? These questions are part of the investigation.

Public Demands Better Safety Rules

After this accident, people are asking the government to take ferry safety more seriously. Many believe that stricter rules, better training, and regular inspections are necessary to protect passengers.

Lessons to Learn from the Incident

This tragedy shows how quickly things can go wrong on a ferry. It’s important for travelers to know where the life jackets are and follow safety instructions. At the same time, ferry companies must keep their ships safe and ready for emergencies.

A Story of Both Loss and Bravery

While this accident brought great sadness, it also showed great bravery. The rescue teams worked fearlessly, and many passengers helped each other in the water. Though three lives were lost, hundreds were saved.

Ferry Company Yet to Issue Statement

The ferry company that owns KM Barcelona 5 has not yet made a public statement. People are waiting to hear what they have to say and how they plan to ensure safety on their ferries in the future.

Ferry Services May Be Temporarily Suspended

After the accident, some ferry services in the region may be temporarily paused for safety checks. The government wants to make sure that all ferries are safe before they sail again.

A Need for Stronger Safety Measures

This incident has touched the hearts of many people in Indonesia and around the world. It is a strong reminder that ferry travel must be safe for everyone. With better rules and stronger checks, we can prevent more tragedies like this from happening.
