Massive Ferry Fire in Indonesia: 3 Dead, Over 500 Rescued

A ferry named KM Barcelona 5 caught fire while sailing near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The fire created a very dangerous and scary situation for all the people on board. Many passengers had to jump into the sea to save themselves from the fire. It was a terrifying moment that ended in tragedy for some.

Three People Lost Their Lives

Ferry Was Headed to Manado City

The ferry had started its journey from Melonguane port, located in the Talaud Islands district, and was traveling towards the city of Manado, which is the capital of North Sulawesi province. Everything was normal until the fire started during the trip.

Fire Started at the Back of the Ferry

The fire began at the stern, or back part of the ferry. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown. When passengers saw smoke and flames, panic broke out, and many people started screaming and running. Some jumped into the sea without thinking.

Hundreds Jumped Overboard in Fear

Due to fear and confusion, many passengers jumped overboard. Some of them didn’t know how to swim but still jumped to escape the fire. People were shouting, crying, and holding onto floating objects while waiting to be rescued.

Quick Response from Rescue Teams

The Indonesian government acted fast. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) confirmed on Monday that at least 568 people were rescued. This quick action saved many lives.

Large Rescue Operation Was Launched

A big rescue operation was organized. One coastguard ship, six rescue vessels, and several inflatable boats were sent to save passengers. The team worked quickly to reach those who had jumped into the sea or were stuck on the ferry.

Fire Was Controlled Within an Hour

According to Franky Pasuna Sihombing, the head of the Manado navy base, the fire was extinguished in about one hour. The rescue operation took place while the fire was still burning. The team worked hard to prevent the situation from getting worse.

The authorities have not yet confirmed how the fire started. Investigators are now checking the ferry, especially the stern where the fire began. They will try to find out if the fire was caused by a technical problem or by human error.
