Max Verstappen Wins Italian Grand Prix With Strong Monza Drive

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Dutch driver Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 world champion and Red Bull’s leading star, made a powerful comeback by winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The race, which was the 16th round of the 2025 F1 World Championship, brought excitement to fans and saw Verstappen claim his third win of the season. His victory was a reminder of his racing skill and determination to remain a top competitor in Formula 1.

Starting From Pole Position

Verstappen began the race from pole position after setting a record-breaking lap during Saturday’s qualifying session. His lap time was the fastest in the history of the championship, proving once again his ability to deliver under pressure. Starting from pole gave him a strong advantage as he looked to dominate the race at Monza, known as the "Temple of Speed."

Early Pressure From McLaren Drivers

Although Verstappen had the best starting spot, the McLaren drivers—Britain’s Lando Norris and Australia’s Oscar Piastri—kept the pressure on him throughout the race. At one point, Verstappen briefly lost the lead after running off the track. He was instructed by his team to let Norris pass, but his quick response allowed him to regain the lead almost immediately. From that moment, he stayed firmly in control.

Maintaining Control Of The Race

After reclaiming the top spot, Verstappen showed why he is a four-time defending world champion. He built a steady lead, managed his tires well, and avoided mistakes. By the closing stages of the race, his pace was unmatched, and he crossed the finish line nearly 20 seconds ahead of the McLaren duo. The gap reflected his dominance on the track and gave Red Bull fans plenty to celebrate.

Norris And Piastri On The Podium

While Verstappen took the top step of the podium, McLaren had plenty to smile about too. Lando Norris finished in second place, while his teammate Oscar Piastri secured third. Their strong results added more points to McLaren’s already impressive season, keeping them far ahead in the Constructors’ Championship. Both drivers have shown remarkable consistency, with Piastri still leading the overall drivers’ standings.

Ferrari And Mercedes In The Mix

The Italian crowd, known for their passion for Ferrari, hoped to see Charles Leclerc claim a podium spot at his home race. However, Leclerc had to settle for fourth place. Mercedes also fought hard, with Britain’s George Russell finishing fifth and Lewis Hamilton taking sixth. Both teams continue to chase McLaren in the Constructors’ standings but have not been able to match the consistency of Norris and Piastri this season.

Verstappen’s 66th Career Victory

This win marked the 66th career victory for Max Verstappen, highlighting his remarkable journey in Formula 1. Although 2025 has not been as dominant for him as some previous seasons, the Dutch driver continues to prove he is one of the sport’s greatest talents. The Italian Grand Prix was his first win since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, earlier in the season during round seven. The return to the top step of the podium gave Verstappen a much-needed confidence boost.

Season Standings After Monza

Despite Verstappen’s win, the championship standings remain largely unchanged at the top. Oscar Piastri continues to lead the drivers’ standings with 324 points. His teammate Lando Norris follows closely in second with 293 points. Verstappen sits third with 230 points, still behind both McLaren drivers. While this win narrows the gap slightly, the road to another world title looks challenging for the Red Bull driver this season.

McLaren’s Dominance In Constructors’ Championship

McLaren extended their stronghold in the Constructors’ Championship thanks to the second and third-place finishes in Monza. Their points tally rose from 584 to 617, giving them a massive lead over their rivals. Ferrari remain in second with 280 points, followed by Mercedes with 260 and Red Bull with 239. The gap shows just how consistent and powerful McLaren has been throughout the season.

Red Bull’s Challenge This Season

For Red Bull, Verstappen’s victory is a positive sign, but the team has struggled compared to their past dominance. They remain well behind McLaren in the Constructors’ standings, and Verstappen’s teammates have not managed to secure big results to support the team’s fight. The Italian Grand Prix showed that while Verstappen can still win races, Red Bull needs more consistency from the entire team to close the gap.

Fans Celebrate A Classic Monza Race

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is always a special event for Formula 1 fans. Known for its long straights, high speeds, and historic atmosphere, Monza is one of the most loved races on the calendar. This year’s edition did not disappoint, with close battles, dramatic moments, and a champion’s comeback. The victory was especially meaningful for Verstappen, who proved he is still capable of dominating on one of the sport’s most iconic tracks.

Looking Ahead To The Next Races

With the season moving into its final stretch, every race will be crucial for the championship fight. Piastri and Norris are in strong positions to battle for the title, while Verstappen will look to build momentum from his Monza victory. Ferrari and Mercedes will aim to close the gap in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings. The excitement continues as the next rounds promise more drama, speed, and thrilling racing action.

Verstappen’s Legacy In Formula 1

Even though this season has been tougher, Verstappen’s place in Formula 1 history is already secure. A four-time world champion with 66 career wins, he is among the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen. His determination to fight back, even when the championship looks difficult, shows his competitive spirit. Fans across the world admire his skill, and his latest win adds another memorable chapter to his career.

A Champion’s Return To The Podium

The 2025 Italian Grand Prix will be remembered as the race where Max Verstappen returned to form. Starting from pole, overcoming brief challenges, and finishing with a huge lead, he reminded everyone why he is a world champion. For McLaren, the race reinforced their dominance, with Norris and Piastri continuing to lead the way. With several rounds left, the championship battles remain intense, but Verstappen’s Monza victory has kept the excitement alive.
