Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced he will not participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions next month in Abu Dhabi, ending a remarkable 13-season run in the popular Twenty20 competition. Maxwell’s decision marks the close of a long and successful IPL career, where he became known for his explosive batting and valuable contributions as a bowler.
Maxwell played last season for Punjab Kings, who acquired him for 42 million rupees ($467,000). However, his campaign was not very productive, as he scored only 48 runs and took four wickets across seven games. Following the season, he was released by the franchise in November, signaling the start of the end of his IPL journey.
Speaking about his decision, the 37-year-old expressed gratitude for the opportunities the league provided. Maxwell said the IPL shaped him as both a cricketer and a person, allowing him to play alongside world-class teammates, represent multiple franchises, and perform in front of passionate Indian fans. He described the memories, challenges, and energy of the league as unforgettable, emphasizing the profound impact it had on his career.
Maxwell is not the only star to rule himself out of the upcoming 2026 auctions. South African captain Faf du Plessis chose to focus on the Pakistan Super League instead, while West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell opted to join the Kolkata Knight Riders’ coaching setup rather than participate as a player. These absences mark a significant change in the league, as several veteran stars are exploring new roles and opportunities outside the IPL.
Although Maxwell is stepping away from the IPL, his contributions to the league will be remembered. His aggressive batting style, sharp fielding, and ability to contribute with both bat and ball made him a key player for multiple teams over the years. By choosing to skip the IPL auctions, Maxwell is focusing on other priorities while leaving behind a lasting legacy in the league.
The 2026 IPL auctions are scheduled to take place on December 16 in Abu Dhabi. Teams will look to rebuild and strengthen their squads, adjusting to the absence of seasoned players like Maxwell, du Plessis, and Russell. These changes may influence team strategies and provide opportunities for younger talents to make their mark in the tournament.
