In a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter, Real Madrid overcame an early deficit to claim a hard-fought 4-3 victory against Olympiacos on Wednesday. Kylian Mbappe was the star of the show, scoring four times, including a remarkable hat-trick in under seven minutes, which ranks among the fastest in Champions League history. This victory also marked Madrid's first win at Olympiacos after five attempts, ending their three-game winless run.
The match began with Olympiacos taking the initiative, as Chiquinho found the back of the net within the first eight minutes. However, Mbappe quickly turned the tide, netting three goals within a mere six minutes and 42 seconds, starting with a well-placed shot from an assist by Vinicius Jr that leveled the match at 1-1. Continuing with his momentum, he scored with a header from Arda Guler’s cross, followed by a composed finish that put Real Madrid ahead 3-1 by the 24th minute.
Despite Real's first-half dominance, Olympiacos pushed back, narrowing the gap with a close-range header from Mehdi Taremi shortly into the second half. Mbappe restored the two-goal lead just after the hour mark, showcasing his speed and skill once more with assistance from Vinicius Jr.
In a tense finale, Olympiacos struck again through Ayoub El Kaabi in the 81st minute, but Real Madrid's defense held firm despite mounting pressure and close calls from El Kaabi and Gabriel Strefezza.
After the game, coach Xabi Alonso commended his team's resilience and emphasized the significance of breaking their winless streak. “The important thing was to win, to break the cycle,” he stated. Alonso also praised Mbappe's overall impact, remarking, “His goals are fundamental, but that’s not all. His personality and teamwork are invaluable.”
This victory lifts Real Madrid to fifth place in the Champions League standings with 12 points, while Olympiacos sits at the bottom with two points after three matches. This match underscores both Mbappe’s talent and Madrid’s determination in their pursuit of European glory.
