Mbappe's Brilliance Sees Madrid Through Close Encounter with Talavera

Post by : Meena Hassan

Kylian Mbappe showcased his talent once again as Real Madrid narrowly claimed victory over Talavera, edging them 3-2 in the Copa del Rey round of 32 on Wednesday.

The French forward netted the opener via a penalty in the 41st minute, and later sealed the game with a brilliant long-range shot, marking his 10th goal in six matches for Madrid. He also contributed to Talavera’s first-half own goal by Manuel Farrando right before halftime.

Real Madrid’s coach, Xabi Alonso, applauded his star striker: “He was crucial. Kylian’s natural scoring ability shone through today. That third goal was essential, which is why he stayed on the field and was in the starting lineup.”

Although Madrid dominated much of the match, Talavera created a few nervous moments towards the end. Nahuel Arroyo scored in the 80th minute, and Gonzalo Di Renzo added another during stoppage time, closing in on Madrid’s lead. A vital save from goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in the dying moments ensured Madrid’s win.

Despite missing several key players, Madrid controlled the first half but acknowledged that they missed opportunities to expand their lead comfortably. Alonso reflected, “In the first half, we managed the game well and took an early lead, but not converting to 3-0 left the door ajar. The second half was more competitive. It was an engaging match. Goal accomplished, and we look forward to the next challenge.”

With this win, Madrid sidesteps an unexpected Copa exit, ending the year on a high note ahead of their weekend clash with Sevilla in the Spanish league. Mbappe's continued excellence remains crucial for Madrid as they seek to regain their earlier form.
