Girona coach Míchel said on Thursday that Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic will no longer play for the club after refusing to take part in a recent match. He criticised Livakovic for not putting the club’s interests first and focusing only on his international future.
Míchel explained that the reserve goalkeeper told him openly that he wanted to leave Girona and was thinking only about the World Cup. According to the coach, Livakovic said he was not willing to play because doing so might affect his chances of joining another team. Since players can represent only two clubs in a season, and Livakovic already played for Fenerbahce, he wanted to stay eligible for a transfer.
The coach also revealed that he asked Livakovic to play in a Copa del Rey match earlier this month, but the goalkeeper refused. This forced the team’s regular starter, Paulo Gazzaniga, to play despite having the flu and a high fever. Míchel said this situation has left the club with only one available goalkeeper until the winter transfer window opens.
He added that he decided to speak publicly because he believed the fans deserved to know the truth. Gazzaniga, who has been with the club for three years, has had a mixed season and made some costly mistakes in recent matches, including errors that led to two goals for Elche.
Girona is currently 18th in the league table and inside the relegation zone, making the goalkeeper situation even more challenging for the team as it fights to stay in the top division.
