Washington: US President Donald Trump recently caused a stir in diplomatic circles by asserting that India would cease its purchases of Russian oil, allegedly based on assurances from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This statement emerged during a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky at the White House, where Trump claimed India had already scaled back its imports and would completely stop soon.
Trump's statements garnered significant attention, suggesting that India's discontinuation of Russian oil could contribute to resolving tensions in Eastern Europe. He noted that India historically sourced 38% of its oil from Russia but indicated that this figure had drastically reduced, stating, "India is not going to be buying Russian oil anymore. They have already de-escalated and are pulling back."
The former president further detailed that Modi personally informed him about this decision, explaining, "He assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia...but it will be over soon."
During his address, Trump also praised Modi, referring to him as a "great man" and labeling India as an "incredible country." He emphasized that a reduction in Russian oil dependency would reflect India’s leadership on the world stage, anticipating that they would return to purchasing from Russia only after the conflict resolves.
Trump's claims suggested a diplomatic achievement for his administration as Washington urges allies to reduce their energy ties with Moscow amid the conflict in Ukraine. However, these assertions were swiftly contested by Indian authorities.
Immediately following Trump's statements, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) denied any recent discussions between Modi and Trump concerning oil imports from Russia.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal commented on the situation, stating, "Regarding the comment from the US on the energy issue, we have already issued a statement which you can refer to. There has been no discussion between the Prime Minister and President Trump."
This clear denial by MEA emphasizes that Trump's claim about India's cessation of Russian oil imports is unfounded, reinforcing India’s commitment to make energy decisions based on national interest rather than external political influence.
Over recent years, India has ramped up its oil imports from Russia, influenced largely by competitive pricing from Moscow. Despite Western sanctions post-Ukraine invasion, India has maintained its stance on continuing these imports to assure energy stability for its population.
While Trump asserts that India will halt its purchases, India maintains the position to prioritize its economic interests. Although China leads in Russian energy purchases, India's share of these imports has risen, allowing it to stabilize fuel prices nationally.
Conversely, Trump's administration recently imposed a 25% tax on Indian oil imports from Russia while not extending similar measures to China, prompting criticism and claims of favoritism.
Strikingly, Trump's comments coincided with an Indian trade delegation's arrival in Washington for discussions with US officials aimed at enhancing economic ties while addressing trade and energy interests.
The Indian Commerce Ministry indicated that India might import between $12-$13 billion in crude oil and natural gas from the US without needing significant modifications to current refinery technologies. Officials maintained that they are eager to diversify energy sources if offered at competitive prices.
This dialogue follows a recent meeting between new US Ambassador Sergio Gor and Indian leaders, including Modi, Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to reinforce bilateral relations.
While Trump's claim about India's supposed withdrawal from Russian oil has dominated headlines, many diplomatic analysts suggest it reflects his broader political agenda rather than reality. For India, focused on strategically balancing its energy policies with economic interests remains paramount.
Analysts suggest that Trump's assertions are part of a strategy to show progress in isolating Russia economically while strengthening India ties as he approaches his domestic political objectives. Meanwhile, India's immediate denial points to its determination to maintain an independent energy stance and to cultivate relationships with multiple nations, including both Russia and the US.
The global community is keenly observing to see if Trump's statements regarding India's oil independence will influence diplomatic relations or simply become another chapter in the evolving story of international energy dynamics.
