Actor Meezaan Jafri, son of renowned actor Jaaved Jaaferi, recently shared his thoughts on the challenges associated with being a star kid in Bollywood. He tackled the widespread belief that children of celebrities enjoy an easier route in the film industry, clarifying that the truth is much more nuanced.
“People often assume star kids have everything handed to them, but that’s not entirely true,” Meezaan stated. “There might be some benefits, like early access to opportunities, but the expectations and pressures that come with being a star kid can be burdensome. Sometimes it’s actually more advantageous to enter the industry without that baggage as it allows for a fresh start.”
Meezaan pointed out that all actors, regardless of their family background, encounter unique challenges. “Every artist has their own path and obstacles to overcome. Instead of assigning blame, we should recognize that navigating this landscape is tough for everyone,” he explained.
He also touched upon the issue of groupism within the film sector, highlighting that every actor has their own network and that talent management agencies frequently collaborate with specific production companies. These dynamics present both opportunities and hurdles for newcomers, whether they are star kids or not.
Meezaan began his career in Bollywood as an assistant director for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, contributing to films like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. He made his acting debut with Bhansali’s production Malaal, co-starring with Sharmin Sehgal. Although the film did not fare well at the box office, Meezaan continued to establish his presence, appearing in titles such as Hungama 2, Yaariyan 2, and The Miranda Brothers.
Currently, he is garnering attention for his performance in De De Pyaar De 2, directed by Anshul Sharma and produced by T-Series Films along with Luv Films. Featuring stars like Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh, and R. Madhavan, the romantic comedy-drama has received mixed criticism but is doing well at the box office, grossing ₹61.85 crore domestically.
Meezaan’s insights underline the reality that being a star kid does not automatically translate to success; the Bollywood landscape is fraught with expectations and distinctive challenges. His frank reflections provide valuable context on the difficulties actors face in the industry, regardless of their background.
