On Monday, Melania Trump introduced the White House's inaugural Christmas decorations post-family return, launching a spirited theme called “Home Is Where the Heart Is.” This year's display serves as a prelude to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, infusing the celebration with a patriotic flair.
With the support of numerous volunteers nationwide, the Executive Mansion has undergone a significant transformation. The effort includes an impressive array of 75 wreaths, 51 Christmas trees, over 700 feet of garland, more than 2,000 light strands, 25,000 feet of ribbon, 2,800 gold stars, 10,000 butterflies, and 120 pounds of gingerbread to evoke a holiday atmosphere.
This year's décor comes with a substantial alteration. The long-awaited ballroom construction project by President Donald Trump has resulted in the demolition of the East Wing, thus changing visitor navigation throughout the building. Tradition has shifted as the official Christmas tree, once placed in the East Wing, now stands in the Blue Room, paying homage to Gold Star families through gold stars and state-themed ornaments.
Although construction is ongoing, public tours will restart on Tuesday with a new, shorter route confined to the State Floor. Visitors can now explore the East Room, and the Green, Blue, and Red Rooms, the State Dining Room, Cross Hall, and the Grand Foyer, while the Ground Floor, including the Library and Vermeil and China Rooms, remains inaccessible.
The White House anticipates welcoming tens of thousands of guests for holiday tours, receptions, and special gatherings. Entrance will be exclusively through the North Portico, following the installation of a semi-permanent walkway.
Each room reflects a unique theme. The East Room showcases red, white, and blue decorations with golden eagle accents, promoting the upcoming America250 celebrations. In contrast, the Green Room displays lively family-oriented décor, featuring large portraits of George Washington and Donald Trump made from over 6,000 Lego-style puzzle pieces. Meanwhile, the Red Room, adorned with thousands of blue butterflies, accentuates youth-centric messaging and highlights Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative.
A highlighted seasonal favorite, the gingerbread White House in the State Dining Room illustrates the South Portico along with a detailed representation of the Yellow Oval Room. The construction makes use of gingerbread, chocolate, pastillage, and royal icing, maintaining a cherished holiday custom.
Melania Trump, alongside Usha Vance, the Vice President's wife, spent part of their day at Joint Base Andrews preparing care packages and holiday cards for service members stationed away from home, demonstrating support for families enduring long separations.
