Lionel Messi has shared the immense significance of his 2022 FIFA World Cup victory with Argentina, describing the moment as one of the most monumental of his life. The Inter Miami player conveyed that the exhilaration felt after raising the trophy in Qatar parallels the joy he experienced with the births of his children.
During a recent event in Miami, where he was celebrated as the guest of honor and received the esteemed “key to the city,” Messi reminisced about how this achievement crowned an illustrious career.
“I say this with utmost respect, but winning the World Cup felt the same as when my children were born. It’s a feeling that’s indescribable, so significant that words don’t do it justice,” Messi remarked.
His comments struck a chord with fans, particularly since this World Cup win followed years of close calls and heartbreaks. In 2014, he faced disappointment when Argentina fell to Germany in the final, leaving him devastated. Eight years later, in Qatar, Messi fulfilled his lifelong ambition. With outstanding performances—including two goals in the final against France—he secured the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, solidifying his legacy as one of football’s all-time greats.
On reflecting about the national celebrations following Argentina’s victory, Messi noted how powerfully the achievement resonated with the people. “The way our country rejoiced showed how much this meant to our fans, especially after such a long wait. For me, winning the World Cup is the absolute pinnacle. There’s nothing beyond that,” he stated.
Messi further elaborated that this victory felt like the perfect conclusion to his career, having accomplished everything possible at both club and international levels. “Winning the World Cup is the ultimate goal for any player; it's like a professional reaching the summit. I have been fortunate to achieve everything else, and the Copa América win with Argentina was crucial. The World Cup was the final piece to complete my journey,” he explained.
While Messi celebrated this historic achievement, a long-time rival seemed to downplay the significance of Argentina's win, suggesting that it wasn’t unusual for a nation with such a strong football pedigree. This comment sparked renewed discussions among fans about the ongoing rivalry between the two football legends.
As for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, Messi expressed his enthusiasm even though he hasn’t confirmed his participation. “I have very high hopes for the World Cup; I believe it will be extraordinary,” he said.
For now, the 2022 World Cup serves as a crowning achievement in Messi’s illustrious career, a moment that not only solidified his football legacy but also secured his name in the annals of Argentina’s sporting history.
