Meta has announced a delay in the launch of its next-gen mixed-reality glasses, dubbed Phoenix, now set for 2027. Initially expected in late 2026, the company has decided to extend the development phase for a more refined product.
As mentioned in an internal memo referenced by Business Insider, Meta's executives indicated that the additional time allows teams to have “more breathing room” for hardware improvement. The Phoenix goggles, which were previously referred to as Puffin, are designed to be lightweight, approximately 100 grams, but are expected to feature lower-resolution displays and less computing power compared to high-end devices like Apple's Vision Pro.
These glasses are a key part of Meta’s comprehensive mixed-reality approach, merging virtual and augmented realities, enabling digital components to engage with the real world. Phoenix is developed under Reality Labs, the same unit responsible for the Quest headset series and Ray-Ban smart spectacles.
This setback occurs as Meta gears up for significant budget cuts. A recent Bloomberg report noted the company aims to reduce metaverse spending by up to 30%, potentially affecting the timelines of offerings within the Reality Labs division.
For now, the revised 2027 target reflects Meta's commitment to emphasizing refinement and consistency ahead of releasing its next major hardware innovation.
