In a significant move, the New York Mets have traded for second baseman Marcus Semien from the Texas Rangers, sending outfielder Brandon Nimmo in the deal. This strategic swap aims to enhance the Mets’ infield as they gear up for the 2026 season.
At 35, Semien is a three-time All-Star who still has three years left on his seven-year, $175 million contract. He faced a setback last season after fracturing his left foot in August, causing him to miss the last five weeks. Nonetheless, Semien’s track record shines, underscored by his critical role in the Rangers’ successful 2023 World Series run, where he played all 162 games, hitting 29 homers and driving in 100 RBIs.
During the 2025 season, Semien participated in 127 games prior to his injury, achieving a .230 batting average with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs. His career stats boast a .253 average, 253 homers, and a total of 801 RBIs across 1,629 games, with prior associations with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and Texas Rangers. Semien has notably finished third in American League MVP voting thrice with different franchises: the A’s in 2019, the Blue Jays in 2021, and the Rangers in 2023.
Brandon Nimmo, aged 32, consented to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate this trade. He has five years left on his eight-year, $162 million contract. Since his major league debut in 2016, Nimmo has consistently been a dependable outfielder, participating in over 150 games in the last four seasons. In 2025, he ended the season with a .262 average, achieving a personal best of 25 home runs and 92 RBIs in 155 games. Overall, Nimmo’s stats include a .262 batting average, 135 home runs, and 463 RBIs in 1,066 games with the Mets.
This transaction emphasizes the Mets’ commitment to boosting their infield, adding a veteran player known for his postseason performance. Semien is anticipated to significantly enhance the team’s lineup with his versatility and leadership, while Nimmo provides the Rangers with a capable and steady outfielder.
With Semien now on board, Mets fans can expect an uptick in both offensive and defensive displays in the upcoming season. His experience in major league baseball and proven consistency make him a valuable addition. Conversely, Nimmo is set to play a crucial part in the Rangers’ rebuilding efforts.
This trade reflects both franchises' determination to refine their rosters and strive toward success in the forthcoming MLB season. The Mets secure a premier player in Semien, whilst the Rangers benefit from a reliable outfielder in Nimmo. Fans are eagerly anticipating how these new dynamics will influence performance in 2026.
