The Mexican government has initiated an inquiry into the president of the Miss Universe organization, Raul Rocha, amid serious allegations of drug and arms trafficking, alongside fuel theft, stirring up significant controversy within the beauty pageant arena. The Attorney General’s Office revealed on Wednesday that 13 arrest warrants have been issued as part of the investigation, though specific names have not been disclosed.
Reports from local media suggest that one of these warrants pertains to Raul Rocha, a Mexican citizen who holds a 50% stake in the Miss Universe organization via his company, Legacy Holding Group USA. This investigation, which has roots going back to 2024, refers to Rocha simply as "Raul R" in adherence to Mexican legal conventions. Authorities indicated that they would provide updates regarding his status in due time. Rocha has been silent on media inquiries, and the Miss Universe organization has yet to issue a statement.
This development comes swiftly after Mexican contestant Fatima Bosch triumphed in this year's Miss Universe contest in Thailand. During earlier stages of the event, Bosch made headlines when she led a walkout of contestants, claiming mistreatment by pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil, who refuted the allegations as a misunderstanding. Bosch received backing from Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum, who commended her for her courage and for being a role model for women.
Rocha obtained his share in the Miss Universe organization in 2024 from JKN Global Group. The ongoing investigation has drawn considerable attention, merging legal scrutiny with the realm of international pageantry. Authorities are actively pursuing the extent of Rocha's involvement and that of others in these alleged criminal endeavors.
This case symbolizes a critical juncture in discussions surrounding the governance and management of global beauty pageants, emphasizing how legal matters can impact public events and cultural institutions.
