Mexico Issues Strong Warning to the US Over Unauthorized Drug Operation

Post by : Shweta

Mexico has formally cautioned the United States about unauthorized American participation in an anti-drug operation in Chihuahua, heightening security cooperation tensions.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that a diplomatic note was dispatched to Washington, stressing that such actions should not recur. She noted that Mexican authorities were not informed regarding U.S. officials' role in the operation, which was revealed following a tragic incident.

The attention to this issue arose after a car accident on April 19 resulted in the deaths of four officials—two from each nation. Reports indicated that the U.S. personnel were connected to intelligence activities but operated without proper authorization in Mexico.

According to Mexico’s security cabinet, the U.S. agents were not formally accredited, with one reportedly entering Mexico as a tourist. This raises significant concerns about potential breaches of national security laws and procedures.

President Sheinbaum reiterated that while her government is committed to cooperating with the U.S. in combating organized crime, all actions must adhere strictly to Mexican law. She made it clear that while intelligence-sharing is permissible, foreign agents should not directly engage in operations within Mexico.

This incident underscores the ongoing friction in bilateral relations, especially regarding approaches to drug cartels. Mexico maintains that it will oversee internal security while U.S. officials, including former President Donald Trump, have called for more aggressive actions against cartels, possibly even involving military force.

This recent turn of events highlights the fragile nature of U.S.-Mexico relations, where necessary cooperation must also respect national sovereignty. Mexican officials assert that future collaborations must adhere to legal standards to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
