No. 7 Michigan showcased a commanding presence on Monday evening, handily defeating San Diego State 94-54 in the opening bout of the Players Era men’s championship in Las Vegas. The Wolverines displayed notable teamwork and a tenacious defense, establishing their dominance from the outset.
With six players reaching double digits in scoring, Michigan's offensive strategy highlighted their balance and confidence. Yexel Lendeborg was the standout performer with 15 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Morez Johnson Jr. and Elliot Cadeau each contributed 13 points, ensuring a consistent scoring output from various positions. Additionally, Nimari Burnett and Roddy Gayle added 11 points apiece off the bench, while Will Tschetter helped to energize the team with 10 points.
Alongside a strong offensive display, the Wolverines asserted themselves physically, troubling the Aztecs with their size and strength throughout the contest. They shot 50% from the floor and converted 11 of 33 three-point attempts, while also dominating the rebounding battle with a 49-34 advantage. Scoring 38 points near the basket, Michigan clearly outmatched San Diego State’s mere 12, and capitalized by scoring 28 points off turnovers.
San Diego State faced difficulty from the outset, struggling to find their rhythm. The Aztecs managed only 27.4% shooting from the field, which severely hampered their scoring opportunities. Elzie Harrington managed 15 points and BJ Davis supported with 11, yet the rest of the team didn’t deliver adequate backing. In the second half, San Diego State hit just 5 of 28 attempts, finishing the match with 17 turnovers that Michigan turned into scoring opportunities.
The Wolverines roared back after halftime with eight unanswered points, swiftly extinguishing any hopes of a comeback. By the game’s final moments, Michigan led by 42 points, exemplifying their complete control over the match.
Spectators had questioned how Michigan’s robust roster would manage against San Diego State’s pervasive defense, but the match highlighted Michigan’s defensive prowess in stifling the Aztecs' offensive options. The San Diego team never adapted nor discovered a breakthrough.
Michigan initially took charge with a 12-point streak in the first half, as Tschetter sank two consecutive three-pointers, propelling the Wolverines to a 17-7 lead. Once in control, Michigan maintained a double-digit lead for a significant portion of the game. Although San Diego State attempted to rally late in the first half with Davis and Harrington scoring 15 consecutive points, Burnett's timely three-pointer ensured Michigan led 45-33 at halftime.
From beginning to end, Michigan’s stellar shooting, tight defense, and depth proved overwhelming for San Diego State. Their combined effort and high energy reaffirmed their position as a top-tier team and strong tournament contender.
