Guided by Yaxel Lendeborg and Roddy Gayle Jr., who both scored 17 points, No. 7 Michigan triumphed over No. 21 Auburn with a 102-72 scoreline on Tuesday. This victory ensures Michigan's place in the championship match of the Players Era men's tournament held in Las Vegas.
The Wolverines seized control early on, responding with an 11-0 run after Auburn's Tahaad Pettiford made the initial free throws. Michigan’s offense was bolstered by Nimari Burnett and Morez Johnson Jr., who each added 15 points, helping establish a substantial early lead.
Auburn's Filip Jovic briefly narrowed the gap to 28-20 with a slam dunk, but Michigan quickly retaliated with an 8-0 surge, including a putback by Burnett, extending their lead to 36-20 with 7:16 remaining in the first half. Lendeborg further stretched the margin with a three-point play, and Gayle capped it off with a three-pointer that pushed the score to 72-42 early in the second half. By halftime, Michigan held a commanding 59-31 lead.
As the second half progressed, Michigan maintained their dominance. Gayle connected on another three-pointer to make it 85-52 with just over nine minutes left. A late three from Winters Grady expanded the lead to 100-65 with only two minutes remaining. The Wolverines displayed exceptional shooting accuracy, with 51.5% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc, while Auburn struggled at 35.5% overall and 41.7% from three-point distance.
Michigan’s success was further amplified by their rebounding and fastbreak points, outpacing Auburn 51-35 on the boards, and dominating fastbreak scoring 29-3. Trey McKenney netted 11 points, while L.J. Cason added 10 points and three steals, exemplifying Michigan’s collective effort.
On the Auburn side, Pettiford led with 16 points, followed by Keyshawn Hall with 15, Filip Jovic contributing 13, and KeShawn Murphy scoring 12. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they struggled to keep pace with Michigan's intensity.
This victory over Auburn marks Michigan's second consecutive blowout win, having previously dispatched San Diego State 94-54, resulting in a robust +40 point margin in the tournament. They are set to face an opponent yet to be determined in the championship game.
With spectacular shooting, swift transitions, and cohesive teamwork, Michigan's performance was noteworthy. Contributions from Lendeborg, Gayle, Burnett, and Johnson Jr. position the Wolverines favorably as they enter the title match, establishing a high bar for both offensive and defensive play.
