Sudan's ongoing conflict faces another setback as General Abdel-Fattah Burhan rejects a U.S.-led ceasefire initiative, referring to it as “the worst yet.” This dismissal renews uncertainty around peace negotiations in a war that has afflicted the nation for over two years.
The ceasefire, proposed by the Quad coalition—comprised of the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE—entailed a three-month humanitarian pause followed by a nine-month political dialogue. Although the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) showed support for the initiative, Burhan criticized the mediators, alleging bias and claiming it undermined Sudan's military and security apparatus.
The fighting started in April 2023 when escalating tensions between the military and the RSF erupted into conflict throughout Khartoum and beyond. The war has reportedly taken over 40,000 lives, with aid organizations estimating the true number may be even higher. Over 14 million individuals have been forced from their homes, leading to famine, disease, and what the U.N. describes as the world's largest humanitarian disaster.
Burhan has publicly criticized the Quad for perceived favoritism towards the RSF, notably singling out the UAE, which human rights advocates allege has been providing arms to the paramilitary group—a claim the UAE refutes. He also dismissed U.S. involvement as an effort to impose conditions on Sudan's armed forces.
The general highlighted that a ceasefire would only be acceptable if the RSF completely withdrew from civilian areas, enabling displaced individuals to return to their homes. “We’re not warmongers, and we don’t reject peace,” Burhan asserted, stressing that negotiations must honor Sudan's sovereignty and security.
As clashes persist, analysts caution that without a feasible resolution, the humanitarian crisis could worsen, putting millions at risk of starvation and displacement. The road to peace in Sudan remains tenuous, as both internal strife and external pressures hinder efforts to achieve stability.
