On Sunday night in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Minnesota Wild achieved an impressive 2-0 victory against the Calgary Flames. Displaying solid teamwork and effective defense, the Wild showcased their skills with Jesper Wallstedt leading in goal. Matt Boldy netted one goal and assisted another, while Kirill Kaprizov sealed the win with a late empty-net goal.
Jesper Wallstedt was the standout player, stopping all 36 shots aimed at his net, marking his first shutout in the 2025–26 NHL season. At just 22 years old, Wallstedt’s performance was notable; he made 11 saves in the first, 12 in the second, and 13 in the final period. This shutout came in only his fifth start of the season, showcasing both his skill and composure in goal.
After a scoreless first period, it was midway through the second when Matt Boldy broke the deadlock. He received an excellent pass from Marcus Johansson, maneuvered around the Flames' defense, and slotted the puck through Devin Cooley's pads, putting the Wild ahead 1-0 with his eighth goal of the season. The excitement from the crowd resonated throughout the arena.
Despite their best efforts, the Flames couldn’t manage to breach Wallstedt’s defense; MacKenzie Weegar led the Flames with six shots, yet none were successful in hitting the net. This loss marked Calgary's second consecutive shutout, with a total of 6-0 across their last two games. The frustration among the Flames was palpable as they failed to convert on numerous opportunities.
In a desperate attempt to equalize, Calgary pulled their goalie with less than a minute left in the game. However, Kirill Kaprizov took advantage of the empty net, scoring with just 50 seconds remaining, pushed by assists from Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy, finalizing the score at 2-0 for Minnesota, much to the delight of the home fans.
This shutout stands as a personal achievement for Wallstedt, being only the second shutout in his NHL career, surpassing his previous record of 31 saves. His earlier best performance was on October 13, 2025, against the Los Angeles Kings. Wallstedt’s ascent reveals his increasing confidence and the potential to rise as one of the league's elite young goaltenders.
The Wild's defense was instrumental in maintaining their lead. Even under pressure, they remained organized and effectively blocked crucial shots. A moment of concern arose in the second period when Brock Faber was injured, colliding awkwardly with Nazem Kadri, but he returned to play, reinforcing Minnesota's defensive lineup.
Calgary had several opportunities, especially when Matt Coronato had a clear shot, but Wallstedt's quick reflexes saved the day with an impressive glove stop. This encapsulated the Flames’ struggle throughout the game—efforts were there, but results were lacking. The team must regroup to regain their offensive momentum in upcoming matchups.
This victory marked back-to-back wins for Minnesota, boosting their confidence ahead of future games. With promising young talents like Wallstedt and Boldy, alongside experienced players like Kaprizov, the Wild exhibit strong defense, rapid transitions, and teamwork as they aim to climb higher in the standings this season.
