The Minnesota Wild showcased their prowess on Friday night, overwhelming the Pittsburgh Penguins with a decisive 5-0 win. The standout performance was from Filip Gustavsson, who notched 19 saves to earn his second shutout of the season. With this victory, the Wild extended their winning streak to four games, exhibiting exceptional play on both sides of the ice.
Remarkably, Minnesota has achieved three shutouts in their last six outings, underscoring the strength of their defense and goaltending. Throughout November, the team has secured eight wins against just one regulation loss, demonstrating impressive consistency. For the Penguins, this game marked their return from Sweden, where they split their Global Series matchups with Nashville.
Gustavsson has developed a formidable partnership with fellow Swedish goalie Jesper Wallstedt, who has also been outstanding. Wallstedt recorded back-to-back shutouts against Calgary and Anaheim and made a career-high 42 saves against Carolina in a recent shootout victory. With both goalies on fire, the Wild are enjoying enhanced stability between the pipes.
Minnesota’s offensive lineup rose to the occasion. Matt Boldy played a pivotal role, scoring twice and assisting once, continuing his scoring surge. Joel Eriksson Ek and Kirill Kaprizov also contributed, each netting goals to secure early dominance in the match. The Wild established a 3-0 lead within just 11 minutes and 42 seconds into the first period, seizing control from the start.
Boldy initiated the scoring at 3:57 by deftly maneuvering around Penguins goalie Arturs Silovs to slot the puck home. This was the 11th consecutive game where Minnesota scored first, highlighting their ability to set the pace in recent contests.
Eriksson Ek doubled the lead at 9:39 with a power-play goal, tipping home a shot just before the end of a double minor against Blake Lizotte. Shortly after, Johansson increased the lead to 3-0 with a deft one-timer from the right circle, putting immense pressure on the Penguins’ defensive unit.
Kaprizov extended the lead early in the second period with his 12th goal of the season, redirecting a shot past Silovs, who was then replaced by Sergei Murashov after facing just 10 shots. Murashov fared reasonably well, saving 9 of the 10 attempts he faced, but the Penguins' offense struggled to breach the Wild's staunch defense.
Boldy capped off his impressive night with a second goal at 2:14 left in the second period, marking eight goals in just eight games after a slow stretch where he netted only once in his previous ten. This impressive form is propelling Minnesota up the standings.
The Wild are set to continue their road trip with a game against Winnipeg on Sunday, while the Penguins aim to bounce back at home against Seattle on Saturday night following this significant defeat.
