Mireille Pélissier-Simard Takes the Bench as Quebec Superior Court Judge

Post by : Shweta

The Canadian government has officially appointed Mireille Pélissier-Simard as a judge for the Superior Court of Quebec in the district of Québec. This announcement was made by Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

This appointment follows the federal judicial selection framework established in 2016, aiming to promote transparency, merit-based selection, and diversity in the judiciary. Officials emphasize that the goal is to ensure all judges across Canada meet rigorous professional standards, integrity, and legal acumen.

Justice Pélissier-Simard succeeds Justice D. Dumais, who has recently advanced to Senior Associate Chief Justice within the Superior Court of Quebec. This change is part of ongoing efforts to sustain robust leadership in the judiciary.

Previously, Pélissier-Simard practiced law as a family mediator in Quebec, possessing over two decades of experience mainly in family and human rights law. She earned her law degree from Laval University and joined the Barreau du Québec in 1997.

In her career, she has made significant contributions to legal education, frequently speaking at conferences, and authoring various publications on family law. Additionally, she has actively participated in several legal organizations, including the Barreau de Québec and the Association des familialistes de Québec.

Pélissier-Simard has also engaged in academia, teaching human rights law at Laval University. Recently, she was commissioned by Quebec's Justice Ministry to develop a report on child support systems, showcasing her expertise in family law.

Minister Fraser expressed his belief in Justice Pélissier-Simard’s dedication and professionalism, affirming that her considerable experience will enhance the court's effectiveness.

This appointment underscores Canada’s commitment to reinforcing its judicial framework by choosing competent and experienced legal professionals dedicated to serving their communities.
