Mleiha National Park Becomes UNESCO Site & Boosts Sharjah Tourism

Mleiha National Park in Sharjah has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Faya Palaeolandscape. Once a quiet desert, it is now a major heritage destination. The recognition puts Sharjah on the global cultural map and highlights the value of preserving history.

Walk Through Ancient History

Visitors to Mleiha can explore human history dating back over 210,000 years. The park features Neolithic settlements, Bronze Age tombs, and one of the oldest forts in the Arabian Peninsula. Every corner allows visitors to see how early humans lived, worked, and traded.

Cultural Tourism Drives Economy

Cultural tourism is now 40% of global tourism, according to the UN World Tourism Organisation. UNESCO and OECD studies show that every $1 invested in heritage brings $2.5 back to the local economy through visitor spending, jobs, and infrastructure. Mleiha demonstrates this model successfully.

The Oldest Fort

The mud-brick fort in Mleiha dates back to the 3rd century BCE. It is the UAE’s oldest known fort, once protecting the community and controlling trade routes. Visitors can now explore its structure and imagine life in ancient times.
