Île Mercier Bridge in Montreal Closed Amid Flood Concerns

Post by : Shweta

In a swift response to escalating water levels in the Rivière des Prairies, officials have closed the Île Mercier bridge to vehicle traffic in Montreal. This precautionary measure took effect at 7 p.m. on Monday to prioritize public safety amid looming flood threats.

Connecting Île-Bizard with Île Mercier, the bridge is crucial for local transportation. While it remains accessible to pedestrians, motorists are advised to seek alternate routes. City officials are keeping a close watch on the area's water levels, responding to the seasonal shifts and melting snow that are contributing to rising tides.

Residents of Île Mercier are actively taking flood preparedness steps, drawing from experiences during past flood events in 2017 and 2019. Many have installed water pumps, amassed sandbags, and readied emergency supplies, while some have even secured boats for potential evacuations.

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada reassured that no evacuation orders have been placed at this time, but authorities remain vigilant and constantly assess the evolving situation. Additionally, areas like Pierrefonds-Roxboro have seen road closures as a preventive strategy against flooding.

The spring season in Montreal frequently brings flooding, as rising temperatures cause snowmelt and overflow in waterways. Residents are urged to stay updated with city alerts and adhere to safety measures. To assist, sandbags are being distributed to those in need, while emergency services maintain readiness.

Other regions in Quebec, such as Fort-Coulonge, are also grappling with serious flooding threats, prompting officials there to declare a state of emergency and provide sandbags to fortify properties.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, maintaining a strong message of caution for residents as water levels remain unpredictable.
