Post by : Meena Hassan

The journey to the knockout rounds of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 has concluded with Morocco, Mali, and South Africa securing their spots after the final group-stage matches.

In Group A, Morocco, known as the Atlas Lions, showcased a dominant display against Zambia at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. They triumphed with an impressive 3-0 victory, ensuring their top position in Group A with seven points, thus advancing confidently to the round of 16. In contrast, Zambia struggled throughout the group stage, finishing last with only two points and exiting the tournament.

The other match in Group A saw Mali face the Comoros at the Mohamed V Complex. Despite both teams putting in a solid effort, they ended in a goalless stalemate. This draw allowed Mali to secure second place in the group with three points, earning them a spot in the knockout stages. The Comoros, despite their efforts, finished third with two points and were eliminated.

Group B featured a thrilling encounter between South Africa and Zimbabwe at the Marrakesh Stadium. South Africa edged out a narrow 3-2 victory, securing six points and confirming their progression to the round of 16 as the second-placed team in their group. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe’s loss ended their chances of advancement.

Meanwhile, Egypt maintained their unbeaten status, finishing at the top of Group B. Earlier, they played a cautious 0-0 draw against Angola, which secured them seven points. Their strong performance in the group stages positions them as potential title contenders for this edition of AFCON.

With the group stages concluded, Morocco, Mali, South Africa, and Egypt gear up for the knockout rounds where the competition will certainly heighten in pursuit of the prestigious continental trophy.
