Mubadala and PLN EPI Forge Agreement to Enhance Indonesia's Gas Supply

Mubadala and PLN EPI Forge Agreement to Enhance Indonesia's Gas Supply

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a strategic move to enhance its domestic energy capacity, Indonesia has witnessed Mubadala Energy and PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) signing a Heads of Agreement (HoA) aimed at channeling gas from the Andaman Sea to vital areas across the nation. This initiative marks a robust step towards reinforcing national energy security amid increasing demand.

The agreement will enable both entities to collaboratively minimize dependence on LNG while expanding access to indigenous natural gas. The focus will be primarily on servicing North Sumatra and Aceh, regions where industrial and residential consumption is outpacing current fuel delivery capabilities. A pivotal aspect of this partnership is the exploratory development of the Tangkulo gas field, positioned approximately 65 kilometers offshore from North Sumatra, estimated to hold around 2 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas.

This agreement is anticipated to serve as a cornerstone for ongoing initiatives aimed at establishing a more robust energy framework. By leveraging Mubadala Energy’s expertise alongside PLN EPI’s role in ensuring power sector fuel security, the partnership seeks to facilitate Indonesia's overarching goal of utilizing local energy assets effectively while improving system dependability.

The signing event was attended by representatives from the government, emphasizing national endorsement for emerging gas projects in the Andaman region. With the HoA finalized, both entities will advance discussions on technical and commercial aspects as Indonesia accelerates its strategy to expand its natural gas supply infrastructure and enhance future energy preparedness.
