The Mumbai Indians have acquired West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2026 season. Rutherford joins the team at his current fee of INR 2.6 crore, adding crucial depth to MI’s middle order and bowling capabilities. This acquisition follows MI’s recent trade for Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants, further fortifying both their batting and bowling for the upcoming season.
The 27-year-old Rutherford boasts experience with 44 T20Is for the West Indies, highlighted by a record sixth-wicket partnership of 139 runs alongside Andre Russell against Australia in Perth. In the IPL, he has appeared in 23 matches for Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kolkata Knight Riders. Although he was part of the MI squad in 2020, he did not play in any matches that season.
Across his IPL journey, Rutherford has accumulated 397 runs with an average of 24.81 and a strike rate of 137.37, featuring 25 fours and 26 sixes. His highest score stands at 46, and he has yet to secure a half-century. During the 2025 season, he showed significant improvement, scoring 291 runs in 13 matches at an average of 32.33 and a strike rate of 157.30, including 22 fours and 18 sixes. His aggressive batting style and game-finishing ability make him a valuable asset for MI.
Shardul Thakur, previously with LSG, joins Mumbai Indians for his existing fee of INR 2 crore. Thakur was an injury replacement in IPL 2025 and participated in 10 matches. Renowned for his versatility, he has delivered pivotal performances for various franchises, contributing effectively with both bat and ball—an essential utility player for MI this season.
With the additions of Rutherford and Thakur, Mumbai Indians aim to enhance their batting depth and bowling strength. Coach Mark Boucher will enjoy greater flexibility in player combinations and strategic adjustments during matches. These signings are anticipated to provide MI a well-rounded team poised for a robust challenge in IPL 2026.
Mumbai Indians stand as one of the most successful IPL franchises, having clinched the title five times, sharing the record with Chennai Super Kings. However, they last won the tournament in 2020. In the previous season, MI reached Qualifier 2 but lost to Punjab Kings by five wickets. These new acquisitions underscore MI’s aspirations to reclaim the title and re-establish their dominance in IPL 2026.
The integration of Sherfane Rutherford and Shardul Thakur enhances Mumbai Indians’ options in the middle order, bolstering their finishing capabilities and bowling variety. Fans and analysts alike will be keen to observe how these signings influence MI’s performance in the fiercely competitive IPL 2026 season.
