A couple involved in cryptocurrency, Roman Novak and his wife Anna, were tragically discovered dead in a secluded area of the UAE desert, allegedly connected to a contentious dispute surrounding a purported USD 500 million investment scheme. Their bodies, both 38 years old, were found concealed in thick plastic bags, buried across a stretch of desert near Hatta, close to the UAE-Oman border.
The discovery came after an international investigation was initiated following the couple's disappearance on October 2. They were last noticed when their driver dropped them off near a lake in Hatta, where they were expected to meet prospective investors for a new crypto project. Detectives reported they transferred to another vehicle and subsequently vanished.
Alarm bells were raised by family members after communication ceased, which led Russian officials to collaborate with authorities in the UAE. Mobile data showed the couple's devices were active between Hatta and Oman before going silent on October 4.
Initial investigations suggest both Novaks were deceived into visiting a rented property. Reports indicate they may have been detained and coerced to relinquish access to digital wallets associated with Fintopio, a cryptocurrency platform that Novak had vigorously promoted in Russia, China, and the Middle East. When attempts to seize the assets failed, the couple was murdered, with their bodies treated using chemical solvents to eliminate any forensic evidence.
According to Russian media outlet 47news, their remains were retrieved over a 500-meter area in the desert, with some unverified reports indicating potential disposal at a shopping center. These claims remain unverified by authorities.
The case has shed light on Novak's history; once a prominent figure in Dubai’s cryptocurrency landscape, he had previously faced legal issues in Russia, including a conviction for investment fraud in 2020 that resulted in a six-year prison sentence. He was released on parole in early 2023, making his way to the UAE to start fresh in the digital finance space. Russian authorities are now investigating whether his network may have generated as much as USD 500 million prior to Fintopio ceasing operations around the time the couple went missing.
Seven individuals have been arrested in Russia, with ongoing cooperation between Moscow and Abu Dhabi. UAE officials are preparing for the repatriation of the bodies for further forensic evaluation. Officially, the incident is classified as a premeditated kidnapping, extortion, and homicide linked to the ongoing inquiries into alleged crypto scam profits.
