A recently published government study has unveiled considerable income disparity in Nagaland, raising pressing concerns about economic fairness and social inequity in the region. The “Report on Income Disparity in Nagaland” indicates that the lower half of households in the state take home only 18 percent of overall income, whereas the top 5 percent dominate with nearly 21 percent of the total earnings. This report highlights the widening wealth divide between the affluent and the financially disadvantaged in Nagaland.
Released in Kohima on May 7, 2026, by Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, the report aims to shed light on income distribution and economic realities across various demographics within the state. The results are anticipated to guide policymakers in crafting economic and social welfare initiatives targeting the reduction of inequality and the enhancement of living conditions for impoverished groups.
According to the findings, the wealthiest 5 percent of Nagaland residents boast an average monthly income of about ₹71,028, while the bottom half barely manages with an average monthly income of merely ₹1,639. The dramatic disparity has alarmed economists and social analysts, who suggest that unequal access to jobs, economic opportunities, and resources is exacerbating the income division.
The report also indicates that Nagaland has a Gini coefficient of 0.46, a standard global metric for measuring income disparity, where 0 signifies total equality and 1 represents extreme inequality. A score of 0.46 highlights a significant level of economic imbalance within the state. Analysts believe this figure mirrors uneven economic advancement and wealth distribution among households.
The findings point to serious challenges faced by families, particularly in rural and economically marginalized areas. Factors such as limited job prospects, reliance on agriculture, slow industrial growth, and uneven district development are identified as critical influences on income distribution. Many low-income families continue to battle for basic access to quality education, healthcare, and reliable income sources.
The report's release has sparked essential conversations around economic strategy and inclusive growth in the state. Upcoming government agendas are expected to prioritize poverty alleviation, job creation, support for entrepreneurial ventures, and rural development schemes. Policymakers may also aim to enhance social welfare programs and improve economic access for marginalized groups.
Experts assert that tackling income inequality will necessitate long-term policy approaches and equitable economic growth across Nagaland. The document stresses the immediate need for sustainable developmental strategies to improve income distribution and alleviate financial disparities among households. The findings are poised to influence forthcoming economic dialogues and decisions within the state government.
