Napoli clinched the Italian Super Cup on Monday, triumphing with a 2-0 scoreline over Bologna in the final held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Brazilian winger David Neres was the star, netting both goals, thereby securing Napoli's third Supercoppa Italiana championship.
The match kicked off with Napoli asserting dominance, quickly monopolizing possession and applying high pressure. Their efforts bore fruit just before halftime as David Neres struck a wonderful curling shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner, giving Napoli a much-deserved lead. This goal marked a turning point against Bologna, the previous season's Coppa Italia champions, who struggled to cope with Napoli's vigorous play.
In the second half, Bologna tried to gain ground but were caught off guard by a critical mistake from goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia. Attempting to play the ball from the back, he misjudged a pass, allowing Neres to intercept and finish calmly, effectively sealing the match's outcome.
David Neres made a significant impact during the tournament, with this being his third goal in the Super Cup, having already scored in Napoli's 2-0 semifinal win against AC Milan, emphasizing his vital role in the team's success.
Following the final, Napoli coach Antonio Conte lauded his team's effort, stating, "The lads deserve congratulations. They demonstrated their desire for this trophy for the fans, allowing us to celebrate a wonderful Christmas with this achievement in our cabinet."
Traditionally, the Italian Super Cup is contested between the Serie A champions and Coppa Italia winners. However, from 2023 onward, the format has expanded to include a four-team tournament, incorporating the runners-up from both competitions. This tournament is set to continue being hosted in Saudi Arabia until 2029, part of a long-term agreement.
This victory adds another prestigious title to Napoli's accolades and enhances their spirits as they continue pursuit of the Serie A title, currently trailing league leaders Inter Milan by just two points.
Napoli will resume Serie A play on Sunday, facing Cremonese in an away match, while Bologna will look to regroup against Sassuolo in their next fixture.
