Nepal's Parliament Suspended Following Home Minister's Resignation

Post by : Shweta

Nepal finds itself in a political upheaval as Ramchandra Paudel has mandated the suspension of both chambers of the Federal Parliament. This decision came swiftly after the unexpected resignation of Home Minister Sudan Gurung, who stepped down amidst allegations of financial impropriety.

The President endorsed the suspension based on the government’s suggestion, citing “special reasons.” This sudden action has alarmed political analysts and opposition figures, who have labeled it unusual and raised questions about its timing, especially since parliament had only recently reconvened.

The turmoil began with Gurung's resignation less than a month into his tenure. Reports have linked him to fiscal dealings with a businessman currently under investigation for money laundering. The main controversy centers on Gurung’s investments in firms allegedly associated with the businessman, casting shadows on both transparency and ethical practices.

In a public statement, Gurung expressed his decision to resign aimed at fostering a fair and independent inquiry. He asserted that preserving public confidence was paramount, prioritizing it over personal ambition. His resignation has been perceived as a measure to mitigate further political strain and enable officials to investigate without hindrance.

In the wake of his departure, Prime Minister Balendra Balen Shah has assumed temporary control of the Home Ministry. The government plans to establish a parliamentary committee to thoroughly probe the matter and ascertain any misconduct.

The suspension of parliament has escalated political frictions within the country. Opposition leaders have condemned the government’s move, positing that pausing parliamentary functions during such critical times could erode democratic accountability and weaken governance.

This developing scenario underscores the persistent challenges within Nepal’s political landscape, where questions of transparency, governance, and institutional stability loom large. The next few weeks will be pivotal as investigations unfold and political figures work to restore order.
