Netanyahu Condemns Support for Palestinian State at UN After Walkouts

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a forceful speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, where he sharply criticized Western countries for recognizing a Palestinian state. His remarks came at a tense moment in global politics, with the war in Gaza nearing its second year and Israel facing growing isolation on the world stage.

Netanyahu’s Strong Message

Speaking in New York, Netanyahu accused countries such as France, Britain, Australia, and Canada of rewarding violence by officially supporting Palestinian statehood this week.

“These countries acted after the horrors committed by Hamas on October 7,” he said, calling their recognition of Palestine a “mark of shame.” He claimed the move sent a dangerous signal to Palestinians: “murdering Jews pays off.”

Netanyahu’s comments reflect his government’s firm opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state. Israel’s current administration is the most right-wing in the nation’s history, and it has repeatedly rejected international calls for Palestinian independence.

The War in Gaza

The backdrop of the speech is the continuing war in Gaza. On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people, according to Israeli figures. That attack shocked the nation and began a conflict that has dragged on for almost two years.

In response, Israel launched a massive military campaign in Gaza. Local health officials say more than 65,000 people in Gaza have been killed, and much of the area has been destroyed. These figures have drawn international criticism of Israel’s military strategy and created pressure for a political solution.

Divisions at the UN

Netanyahu’s address exposed deep divisions at the United Nations. As he walked to the stage, scores of delegates left the hall in protest, a powerful sign of how isolated Israel has become in the global arena.

However, not everyone opposed him. Some leaders and diplomats gave Netanyahu a standing ovation, showing that Israel still has strong supporters, especially among countries that see it as a key ally against terrorism.

Outside the UN, thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in New York, blocking traffic near Times Square. Their presence reflected the growing public anger around the world over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Netanyahu Attacks Critics

During his speech, Netanyahu accused many world leaders of weakness. He said they had “buckled under the pressure of biased media, radical Islamist constituencies, and antisemitic mobs.”

He suggested that while these leaders criticize Israel in public, they secretly value Israeli intelligence services, which he claimed have helped prevent terrorist attacks in their own capitals.

This argument was aimed at reminding the world of Israel’s role in global security. Netanyahu has long framed Israel not just as a local power, but as a frontline defender against terrorism worldwide.

Why Countries Are Recognizing Palestine

The recognition of a Palestinian state by several Western nations marks a major diplomatic shift. For years, many countries avoided this step, hoping peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians would one day decide the issue.

But with negotiations frozen and violence continuing, more governments are now moving forward. They argue that recognizing Palestine is necessary to protect Palestinian rights, give hope to its people, and push Israel toward ending its military occupation.

Critics of Israel’s policies say that without strong international pressure, there will never be a fair solution for Palestinians. Supporters of recognition believe it can balance the unequal power between the two sides.

What This Means for Israel

For Israel, the new wave of recognition is a clear warning sign. Its close allies are growing tired of waiting for peace talks and are moving on their own. This creates a sense of isolation for Netanyahu’s government, which is already under pressure at home from protests about hostages, military strategy, and economic costs of the war.

The walkouts at the UN show that Israel’s message is no longer being accepted by many countries. The fact that protests filled the streets of New York while Netanyahu spoke only added to the image of a leader surrounded by criticism.

The Hostage Issue

In his speech, Netanyahu also spoke about Israeli hostages still held by Hamas. He promised not to forget them and vowed that Israel would continue efforts to bring them home. For many Israelis, the fate of these hostages is one of the most emotional issues of the war.

The mention of hostages was aimed at both domestic and international audiences, reminding the world of the personal toll of Hamas’s October 7 attack.

Editorial View

Netanyahu’s speech was filled with anger, defiance, and warnings. But it also revealed how much Israel’s position has changed in the eyes of the world. What used to be near-unconditional support from Western powers is now giving way to open recognition of Palestine.

The Israeli leader is right that terrorism must not be rewarded. The October 7 attacks were brutal and unacceptable. Yet his government’s response in Gaza has caused enormous suffering, with tens of thousands of civilians dead and whole neighborhoods destroyed. This reality cannot be ignored.

The world’s message is not that “murdering Jews pays off,” as Netanyahu said. The real message is that endless war cannot bring peace. By recognizing Palestine, other countries are trying to create a path forward, even if it angers Israel.

If Israel continues to reject a two-state solution, it risks becoming more isolated. The hostages, the suffering in Gaza, and the walkouts at the UN all point to the same truth: the current path is not sustainable. Dialogue, compromise, and a vision for peace are urgently needed.
