Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to speak at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, facing strong international pressure over Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. His annual UN speech is usually closely watched, but this year, the stakes are higher than ever.
Recently, several countries including Australia, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom recognized an independent Palestinian state. The European Union is also considering tariffs and sanctions on Israel. Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu, accusing him of crimes against humanity, which he denies. The UN’s highest court is also reviewing a genocide allegation against Israel, submitted by South Africa.
Despite growing global criticism, Netanyahu appeared determined as he boarded a plane to New York. “I will tell our truth,” he said. “I will condemn those leaders who, instead of condemning the murderers, rapists, and burners of children, want to give them a state in the heart of Israel.”
In recent weeks, the UN General Assembly held a special session where many nations condemned the 2023 Hamas attack in Israel that killed around 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. The countries called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for humanitarian aid to reach civilians.
The Gaza conflict has resulted in over 65,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced around 90% of the population. Many people are now facing hunger and shortages of basic supplies. While more than 150 countries recognize a Palestinian state, the United States continues to support Israel. However, President Donald Trump has warned Israel against annexing the West Bank, a step that some Israeli leaders are advocating.
During his visit, Netanyahu is also scheduled to meet with President Trump. At the same time, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas addressed the UN via video after being denied a US visa. Abbas welcomed the recent recognitions but stressed that the world must do more to ensure Palestinians can achieve statehood and freedom from occupation.
The Palestinian Authority governs parts of the West Bank, while Hamas controls Gaza. Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza, and east Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East war and withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Palestinians aim to unite these territories for their envisioned independent state under the widely supported two-state solution.
The UN assembly will remain a key stage for Netanyahu to present Israel’s perspective. However, global calls for justice and humanitarian aid continue to grow louder, highlighting the urgent need for a peaceful solution to the conflict.
