The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is ushering in a fresh era for Indian football as Ryan Williams and Abneet Bharti are welcomed into the national camp for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh, set for November 18 in Dhaka.
This training camp kicked off in Bengaluru on Thursday, with both athletes expected to arrive soon. If given the green light, they will be integral to the team ahead of this significant matchup.
Ryan Williams: Bridging Two Worlds
A 31-year-old midfielder, Williams was born in Perth and has previously represented Australia at U-20 and U-23 levels, alongside a senior team appearance during a friendly against South Korea in 2019. After spells with Fulham and Portsmouth in the UK, he joined Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League this year.
Williams has deep connections to India; his mother comes from an Anglo-Indian lineage in Mumbai, and his twin brother Aryn has played for clubs in India such as NEROCA FC. In an Instagram post, he expressed, “Honoured to make official what’s long felt true. Grateful for the love, the opportunity, and the sense of belonging this country has given me.”
Earlier this year, Williams indicated his intention to become an Indian citizen, a process that involved renouncing his Australian passport. Following the completion of that process, he now proudly holds an Indian passport. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey mentioned that Sunil Chhetri initially informed him of Williams’ aspirations.
Bharti, who is 27 and an Indian citizen residing in Brazil, plays for the top Bolivian club Academia del Balompié Boliviano (ABB). Chaubey noted, “We learned about him through the Indian embassy in Brazil, which led us to invite him to our national camp.”
The inclusion of these players underscores AIFF’s expanding focus on identifying and incorporating Indian talent from abroad, aiming to enhance India’s competitive edge in international tournaments. As the AFC Asian Cup qualifier draws near, integrating Williams and Bharti into the team could be crucial.
