In light of the tragic shooting at Brown University, authorities in the United States have significantly ramped up their search efforts. To aid in the identification of the gunman, the FBI has released a fresh video timeline along with improved images. This action follows the release of an individual previously considered a “person of interest,” who was found not to be involved.
The FBI is offering a reward of $50,000 for any information that leads to the suspect's capture or identification. Local and federal law enforcement officials are actively investigating areas throughout Providence. Officers are examining homes, yards, alleys, and dumpsters adjacent to the university campus, hoping to uncover any potential leads.
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon within the engineering building of the university. Reports indicate that the shooter entered a classroom during an exam period, firing a 9mm handgun indiscriminately, resulting in two student fatalities and injuring nine others. The suspect then fled on foot, leading to a campus-wide lockdown that lasted for several hours.
The newly released surveillance footage by the FBI depicts a stocky individual, around 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing dark attire. The suspect was observed walking around the campus streets for approximately an hour shortly after 2 PM on Saturday. However, due to obscured facial features in the footage, identification remains a challenge.
Investigators have already received close to 200 tips. Police are urging residents, business owners, and institutions to review their CCTV or private camera recordings from the time surrounding the incident, as further video evidence could be key to pinpointing the suspect and tracking his movements.
Authorities have refrained from speculating on the possible motives of the gunman, dismissing any theories linked to political, cultural, or ethnic factors, and confirming that all credible leads are being thoroughly investigated.
The tragic event has prompted serious discussions about campus security. Concerns have surfaced regarding unlocked building doors during exam times and inadequate camera coverage in certain locations. In reaction to the incident, Brown University has enhanced its security measures, increasing safety personnel and limiting access to campus facilities.
Established in 1764, Brown University stands as one of the oldest and most esteemed academic institutions in the U.S., housing approximately 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The shooting, which has claimed two lives and injured nine, has deeply unsettled the campus community as law enforcement persists in the search for the suspect.
