Escalating Violence in Gaza and West Bank Challenges Fragile Ceasefire

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A new wave of violence erupted on Tuesday, intensifying fears regarding the stability of the ceasefire that has been in place since early October in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

In southern Gaza, Mohamed Wadi, a journalist, fell victim to an Israeli drone strike in Khan Younis, as confirmed by medical teams at Nasser Hospital. Wadi, known for capturing footage via drone, is one of many Palestinian journalists who have tragically lost their lives amid the ongoing conflict.

On the same day, a man was shot and killed near the boundary of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, according to Al-Awda Hospital. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported over 350 Palestinian fatalities since the ceasefire took effect on October 11, following the Israel-Hamas war. Israel has not commented on the recent killings but has previously indicated that such incidents often occur as retaliatory responses to militant fire.

Both Israel and Hamas are accusing each other of ceasefire violations, perpetuating a tense atmosphere across the congested enclave.

In the occupied West Bank, violence also escalated. Israeli forces killed a suspect allegedly involved in a stabbing incident that injured two soldiers near the settlement of Ateret, north of Ramallah. Israel’s Mada rescue service noted that the soldiers sustained only minor injuries. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the death of an 18-year-old Palestinian in the vicinity, although it remains unclear if it was connected to the same incident.

Farther south, near Hebron, Israeli troops shot a 17-year-old Palestinian accused of a car-ramming attack that had wounded a soldier. The military stated that the suspect posed a threat during his attempted arrest.

Since Hamas' attack on October 7, which triggered renewed conflict in Gaza, the Israeli army has ramped up operations across the West Bank. Palestinian sources assert many casualties have been civilians or peaceful protesters rather than armed participants. There has also been a noticeable increase in settler assaults on Palestinian neighborhoods, further escalating tensions.

Tensions heightened as Israeli forces demolished the home of Abdul Karim Sanoubar in Nablus on Tuesday. Sanoubar, who is in custody, has been accused of planting explosives on buses in central Israel earlier this year. The demolition led to the evacuation of 13 neighboring homes, with smoke billowing from the site of the collapsed structure.

Additionally, cross-border fire persisted in the north, with Israel conducting further strikes on southern Lebanon, maintaining a routine of near-daily exchanges in response to claims that Hezbollah violated last year’s U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
