New Zealand wrapped up their T20 series against the West Indies with an emphatic win in Dunedin on Thursday. Bowler Jacob Duffy made a significant impact, taking four wickets for 35 runs, leading New Zealand to an eight-wicket victory in the final match. This result granted New Zealand a series triumph of 3-1, marked by a standout performance across the board.
The West Indies struggled initially after New Zealand captain Mitch Santner opted to bowl first. The visitors faced early setbacks, quickly losing crucial wickets. Only Roston Chase, with a score of 38, and Romario Shepherd, who contributed 36 runs off just 22 deliveries, managed to counter New Zealand’s bowling onslaught. Their collective effort resulted in a modest total of 140 all out.
New Zealand's bowlers displayed dominance from the first ball. Kyle Jamieson made an early breakthrough, dismissing Alick Athanaze in the second over. Duffy then delivered a game-changing performance in his third over, claiming three wickets for just a single run and leaving the West Indies reeling. His exceptional swing bowling not only earned him the title of Man of the Match but also secured him the accolade of Player of the Series for his consistent showing.
West Indies' captain Shai Hope attempted to establish an aggressive start by hitting a six off the first ball, but this strategy quickly backfired as wickets continued to fall. Rovman Powell managed only 11 runs before succumbing to an ill-timed shot, leaving the team at a precarious 48-5 during the powerplay. Jason Holder tried to steady the ship with a 42-run partnership with Chase, but their dismissals marked the end of any significant hope for a robust target.
Shepherd's late efforts included several boundaries, lifting the score past the 100-run mark before he was caught out, providing Duffy with his fourth wicket and total of ten wickets in the series. Jimmy Neesham contributed with the ball, taking two wickets for 31 runs along with three catches, leading to the innings closure in the 19th over.
Chasing a target of 141, New Zealand’s opening pair made quick work of the chase. Tim Robinson initiated the attack with a brisk 45 from 24 balls, while Devon Conway remained composed, finishing not out on 47. Their partnership saw New Zealand home with over three overs remaining, showcasing a blend of aggression and strategy.
Captain Mitch Santner commended his team, especially the bowlers, stating, “We recognized there might be assistance from the wicket, and our seamers capitalized with early breakthroughs, crucial in T20s. Our bowling has been Exceptional.”
West Indies skipper Shai Hope acknowledged his team’s lack of readiness, saying, “We must be on the front foot from the outset. We fell short today, yet I commend the players for their efforts.” Despite the defeat, he expressed optimism about learning from this experience heading into future matches.
This victory solidified New Zealand's 3-1 lead in the T20 series, continuing their impressive home streak. Attention will now shift to the three-match One Day International (ODI) series beginning Sunday in Christchurch, followed by three Test matches in December. The West Indies will aim to rebound in the longer formats, while New Zealand looks to maintain their home dominance.
