In an electrifying opener at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand defeated England by four wickets in the first ODI on Sunday. Despite a magnificent century from England's Harry Brook, the Kiwis confidently chased 224 runs in just 36.4 overs, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The match was packed with excitement, especially as the hosts faltered early on in their innings. Kane Williamson, returning for the first time since March, was dismissed without scoring. With the score at 70-4, England seemed to have the upper hand. However, Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 78 runs and Michael Bracewell’s solid 51 significantly shifted the momentum, complemented by Mitch Santner’s quick 27, sealing their victory.
Harry Brook emerged as England’s star player, delivering a stunning 135 runs off just 101 deliveries, showcasing exceptional counter-attacking skills. Coming in while England was struggling at 56-6, Brook single-handedly revitalize their innings. Together with Jamie Overton’s valuable 46 runs, England managed to set a target of 223 in 35.2 overs, looking competitive despite the pitch conditions.
New Zealand's bowlers aggressively dismantled England's top order, with Zak Foulkes shining with impressive figures of 4-41, effectively swinging the ball and wreaking havoc, supported by Matt Henry’s 2-53. However, Brook’s aggressive play, which included 11 sixes, provided England with something to defend.
Post-match, New Zealand captain Mitch Santner commended his team's determination. “There was still a lot in the wicket. We lost a few more wickets than we’d have liked, but Daryl and Michael’s partnership was pivotal for us,” he stated, further praising Foulkes' bowling: “The way Zak swung it was remarkable — it looked like a nightmare to face.”
Meanwhile, Harry Brook, named man of the match, expressed satisfaction with his performance despite the loss. “We didn’t get off to a great start, but I aimed to counter-attack. It worked for me today, though we fell short during the middle overs,” he commented.
This victory positions New Zealand advantageously in the ODI series, following their previous T20 series loss of 1-0. The next ODI is scheduled to take place in Hamilton on Wednesday, where England will look to rebound and equal the series.
