Nigar Sultana Refutes Claims of Abuse Against Junior Cricketers

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The captain of the Bangladesh women's cricket team, Nigar Sultana Joty, has publicly addressed serious allegations suggesting she physically assaulted junior team members, decisively rejecting any claims of misconduct. This controversy was ignited when pacer Jaharanara Alam alleged that Sultana displayed inappropriate behavior, including potential physical altercations with younger players. Such claims have rapidly gained traction, igniting significant discussions within the cricketing community.

In an interview with Daily Cricket, Sultana responded to the accusations, emphatically stating that she has never harmed any teammate intentionally. She drew parallels between her situation and the 2023 incident involving Harmanpreet Kaur, who had expressed frustration by striking the stumps during a match in Bangladesh. Sultana insisted that, unlike Kaur, she has no history of physically confronting her colleagues.

“Why would I resort to violence? Just as I wouldn’t hit the stumps with my bat like Harmanpreet did, I would never harm another player,” Sultana asserted. She mentioned that personal expressions of frustration, whether hitting a bat or helmet, are private and should not interfere with team dynamics.

Sultana pointed out that had anyone truly been harmed, appropriate channels within team management would have been utilized for reporting such incidents, rather than communicating claims through external parties abroad.

“The way I’ve been portrayed is completely untrue. I heard that Jaharanara apu made an allegation, stating someone from Australia claimed, ‘Help us, Jyoti apu is beating us.’ If I had truly harmed anyone, wouldn’t there be a manager or coaching staff present to address it? Am I to be viewed as the ultimate authority?” she questioned.

Sultana affirmed that her leadership during the Women’s World Cup 2025, where Bangladesh secured just a single victory against Pakistan, was dedicated to enhancing team performance and did not involve disciplinary issues. She reiterated that the allegations against her fail to reflect her actual interactions with players.

In conclusion, Sultana expressed her willingness to undergo any investigation or discussion with team officials to resolve these matters and validate her innocence. Her statements reflect her unwavering commitment to ethical leadership and fostering a positive atmosphere for teammates while directly addressing media concerns to clarify the situation.
