Christopher Nolan is back with a passion project he's contemplated for more than twenty years. His new film, The Odyssey, engages with Homer’s legendary tale, a fascination that has lingered since the start of his illustrious career.
Early on, Warner Bros. brought Nolan in to helm Troy while Wolfgang Petersen stepped aside. Recalling the moment, Nolan shared, “I was initially signed by Warner Bros. to execute Troy. Wolfgang had established it initially, but when the studio shifted plans on Batman Vs Superman, he took it back.”
Nolan felt a strong connection to the story, especially the elements surrounding the Trojan horse. Ultimately, Petersen returned to the project, leading Warner Bros. to direct Nolan toward Batman Begins, which he once saw as merely a fallback but grew into a groundbreaking trilogy that reshaped the superhero genre.
Petersen’s 2004 Troy featured a stellar cast including Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Diane Kruger, which elicited mixed critical reviews yet garnered nearly $500 million globally. Meanwhile, Nolan’s Batman Begins was a turning point for both him and Warner Bros., solidifying his status as a film innovator.
Now, with The Odyssey, Nolan gathers a powerhouse cast comprising Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, along with Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and others. He expressed excitement about this project for its potential to deliver “depth and authenticity” to a timeless narrative on a grand scale.
Universal Pictures has slated The Odyssey for release on July 17, 2026, promising viewers a theatrical experience that fuses epic storytelling with Nolan’s distinct visual flair.
