Lando Norris showcased his skills at the São Paulo Grand Prix, clinching victory from pole position in what many view as his standout race of the season. The British racer excelled over the weekend, winning both the sprint and main race, boosting his championship standing. Norris now leads teammate Oscar Piastri by 24 points in the title race.
As Norris celebrated a remarkable weekend, Max Verstappen illustrated his prowess once again as he surged from 19th position following a challenging qualifying and an engine change. The Red Bull driver pushed through the pack to secure a third-place finish, reminding everyone of his resilience in difficult circumstances.
Red Bull faced challenges across the weekend, struggling to tune Verstappen’s car optimally. The team made a daring decision to start from the pit lane with a new setup, which paid off on race day as Verstappen found remarkable pace, executing several overtakes and making three pit stops, including one for a slow puncture.
While Verstappen carved his way through the field, Norris maintained his position at the front with calm composure. The young McLaren driver deftly managed race pace and tires, showing no signs of pressure from the title stakes. This maturity shines through his performance this season, as Norris focused solely on improvement.
This seventh victory this season marks a significant turning point in the championship race. Earlier, Norris trailed Piastri by 34 points, but his continuous strong performances have silenced his critics. Now, he appears filled with confidence, while Verstappen trails by 49 points with three races to go in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.
Oscar Piastri began from fourth but faced an early hurdle with a 10-second penalty for a collision with Kimi Antonelli. Although he managed a fifth-place finish, the penalty cost him critical championship points. Piastri contends that the incident was not his fault, claiming he received insufficient space from Antonelli.
Kimi Antonelli rebounded from the early collision impressively, finishing in second—his best career result—while teammate George Russell finished closely behind in fourth, solidifying a commendable finish for Mercedes. Antonelli’s podium emphasizes Mercedes' improving form and his increasing confidence.
Lewis Hamilton's race was less successful, having to retire his Ferrari due to floor damage so early in the race. Hamilton, in his first season with Ferrari, continues to face various difficulties, and this race further underscored those challenges.
Despite extending his lead, Norris acknowledged Verstappen's formidable pace, admitting that Verstappen might have won if he had started higher up. Norris referred to Verstappen as “a constant threat,” anticipating fierce competition in the remaining three races.
Post-race, Norris exuded calmness and confidence, highlighting his growth from earlier missteps and his renewed focus on consistency. McLaren’s engineers commended his ability to handle pressure, which has distinguished him this season. Piastri, on the other hand, will need to regroup to sustain his championship aspirations.
As the 2025 Formula 1 season nears its conclusion with just three races remaining, the championship race remains wide open. While Norris has the upper hand, Verstappen’s performance in Brazil adds an electric element for fans. The upcoming Las Vegas race, known for its fast street circuit, plus the heat of Qatar and the finale in Abu Dhabi promise thrilling head-to-head battles as the season culminates.
