The first practice session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix saw Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, clock the fastest time. The session, however, faced an interruption of 25 minutes due to a red flag caused by track repairs. This delay temporarily stopped all on-track action, forcing drivers and teams to adjust their practice strategies. Despite the pause, Norris maintained his pace and showcased strong performance.
McLaren Team Performance
Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri, who leads the World Championship, finished the session in second place, 0.310 seconds slower than Norris. Piastri faced a power unit issue on his opening lap, which was followed by a minor collision with the tyre barrier at Turn 15. Fortunately, his car was not seriously damaged, and he could continue after repairs. Norris’s ability to set the fastest time despite his teammate’s issues demonstrated McLaren’s competitive pace in the opening session.
Top Performers
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari secured third place with a lap time 0.552 seconds behind Norris. Close behind him was George Russell of Mercedes, just 0.001 seconds slower than Leclerc, showing how tight the competition was at the top of the timing sheet. Williams’ Alex Albon achieved fifth place, while Red Bull drivers Yuki Tsunoda and Max Verstappen, the four-time World Champion, came sixth and seventh respectively. Carlos Sainz managed eighth place, and the top ten were rounded off by Red Bull’s Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar.
Lewis Hamilton Incident
Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, experienced a challenging session. He hit the barriers, causing damage to his front wing and suffering a puncture. This incident forced him to end his session in 13th place, significantly below expectations and demonstrating the challenges of the Baku street circuit, which is known for its narrow sections and high-speed corners.
The first practice session provided insight into the competitiveness of the drivers and teams. Lando Norris’s pace underlines McLaren’s potential for the weekend, while Oscar Piastri’s recovery from a minor incident shows resilience. Ferrari and Mercedes also showed strong pace at the top, despite Hamilton’s crash, indicating a tight battle for qualifying positions. The red flag interruption affected strategies but gave teams time to review data and plan their next runs carefully.
The opening session of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix highlighted the speed, skill, and occasional challenges faced by F1 drivers. Lando Norris led the way, while other top drivers like Piastri, Leclerc, and Russell closely followed. Hamilton’s crash served as a reminder of the risks on a street circuit, while the red flag delay tested the adaptability of all teams. Fans can expect an exciting qualifying session and race, with competition at the very top appearing extremely close.
