Shohei Ohtani delivered another impressive home run, but the Los Angeles Dodgers fell 11–4 to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday at Rogers Centre. Toronto celebrated its first World Series appearance in 32 years with a strong showing.
Dynamic play marked the early phase as the Dodgers took a 1–0 lead in the second inning. Ohtani stepped up with loaded bases but grounded out, a missed opportunity that proved pivotal as the Blue Jays forged ahead. He concluded the game with one hit in four appearances, highlighted by a two-run homer in the seventh.
The match shifted dramatically in the sixth inning when the Blue Jays amassed nine runs. Dodgers’ pitcher Blake Snell struggled, failing to secure an out before being replaced. A grand slam by Toronto's Addison Barger, along with a two-run shot from Alejandro Kirk, electrified the crowd as the team flipped a 2–0 deficit into a comfortable lead.
Ohtani faced jeers from the Toronto crowd throughout the night, stemming from his previous discussions with the Blue Jays before signing a massive $700 million deal with the Dodgers. Remarks like “We don’t need you!” echoed during the ninth inning, but Ohtani kept his composure, walking despite a near pick-off at first base that replay confirmed he was safe.
Following the game, Dodgers’ pitcher Chris Bassitt cautioned, “Don’t poke the bear,” suggesting that Ohtani’s calm demeanor might fuel his performance. Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement stated it was all in good fun, adding, “We’re happy with the players we have,” grinning.
This season, Ohtani has made a comeback from elbow surgery, excelling as both a hitter and a part-time pitcher. He boasts a .282 batting average with 55 home runs, 102 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases, while pitching to a 1–1 record with a 2.87 ERA. There are plans for him to pitch again in Game 3 or 4 of the series.
With the Blue Jays now leading the best-of-seven series 1–0, the Dodgers aim to rebound in Game 2 on Saturday night, featuring Yoshinobu Yamamoto as their starter against Toronto's Kevin Gausman. They hope Ohtani's play will help them level the series before heading to Los Angeles.
