Olivia Dean has voiced strong criticism against the concert ticketing sector, labeling it as “unfair” and “exploitative” after fans received partial refunds for inflated prices on tickets for her upcoming North American tour. Certain resale prices had surged to 14 times the original cost, leading to considerable discontent among her supporters.
The artist had previously denounced the exorbitant fees in an open letter, branding the practice as “shameful” and calling for ticketing companies to “act responsibly”. Her appeal resonated quickly, and on Wednesday, Ticketmaster announced it would impose limits on resale prices for her tour. The platform has also begun refunding patrons who were charged excessively.
Michael Rapino, CEO of Live Nation Entertainment, asserted the company’s commitment to maintaining the affordability of live music, acknowledging the difficulties in regulating all resale platforms but emphasizing the goal to “set an example”.
Dean, who has enjoyed a stellar rise this year with multiple songs in the UK Top 20 and a notable performance at Glastonbury, appealed to the wider music community to take accountability. In an Instagram statement, she expressed that the secondary ticket market is “unregulated” and unfair to average fans, insisting that artists should have the authority to restrict resale prices to their original values before tickets are released.
In the UK, a push for stricter regulations is underway, with the government planning to outlaw the resale of tickets above their original prices. This action follows fervent appeals from prominent artists like Coldplay and Dua Lipa, who highlighted that inflated ticket prices undermine fan trust and accessibility to arts.
Speaking to her fans, Dean emphasized that her concerts are meant to foster open and inviting environments, even if it means operating at a loss. She condemned those profiting from inflated resale tickets, stating that touts “rob artists and fans alike,” perpetuating inequality in the industry. She urged both fans and fellow musicians to advocate for fair pricing practices.
In conclusion, she remarked that the positive reactions to her calls for change made her feel “seen and valued”, affirming that this moment signifies “a good day” for those who cherish accessible live performances.
