Starting July 1, 2025, Oman will take the next big step in its plan to reduce plastic pollution by banning single-use plastic shopping bags in even more businesses.
The Environment Authority said this third phase of the ban will apply to a wide range of stores, including fruit and vegetable shops, groceries, packaging units, candy factories, bakeries, sweet shops, gift stores, and places that sell bread, pastries, and other treats.
These businesses will need to switch to eco-friendly options like reusable cloth or paper bags.
This move is part of Oman’s broader goal to protect the environment and promote sustainable habits, all in line with its Vision 2040 plan. The aim is to encourage both businesses and shoppers to cut down on plastic use and help keep the country clean.
“The support of both businesses and customers is really important,” said the Environment Authority. “We urge everyone to adapt and make environmentally smart choices.”
Oman introduced the first phase of this ban back on July 1, 2024, starting with hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies. In January 2025, the second phase extended to clothing stores, mobile phone shops, furniture outlets, eyewear stores, and other household retailers.
The plan is to gradually expand the ban to all sectors by 2027.
Under Decision No. 8/2024, anyone caught breaking the rules could be fined between 50 and 1,000 Omani riyals. If they repeat the violation within a month, the fine will be doubled.
