Oman’s National Ferries Company Transported More Than 250,000 Passengers in 2025

MUSCAT, Oman — Oman’s National Ferries Company recorded strong passenger and vehicle traffic in 2025, transporting more than 250,000 passengers and over 64,000 vehicles across its maritime network, according to newly released operational data.

The figures show that the company carried an average of about 690 passengers each day during the year. In addition to passenger services, its ferry operations handled more than 27,000 tonnes of cargo, highlighting the growing importance of maritime transport in connecting the Sultanate’s provinces and islands.

The company, which serves as Oman’s national maritime transport operator, said its services continue to support tourism, trade and economic activity while improving connectivity for residents and visitors.

National Ferries Company currently operates a fleet of five vessels dedicated to transporting passengers and vehicles, along with a separate cargo and landing vessel.

The Shanna ferry has the capacity to carry 15 passengers and 38 vehicles. The Jewel of Masirah can accommodate 154 passengers and 38 vehicles, while the Halaniyat, Hormuz, and Sukarah ferries each carry around 106 passengers and 12 vehicles.

The cargo and landing vessel, also named Halaniyat, can transport 12 passengers, 30 vehicles and up to 48 containers, providing additional support for commercial and supply operations.

The company said its ferry network contributes to the national economy by strengthening sea links between provinces and islands and facilitating the movement of people, vehicles and goods.

Besides regular passenger services, the company provides commercial shipping and supply services that support economic zones and development projects throughout Oman. It also offers marine tourism experiences, allowing travelers to visit coastal destinations known for their scenic landscapes and marine biodiversity.

The operator noted that its workforce remains highly localized, with an Omanization rate of 97%, creating employment opportunities for national talent.

Passenger traffic increases significantly during several peak travel periods throughout the year.

Demand rises during the winter tourism season in Musandam, which runs from November to February, and during the summer holiday months. Activity also grows on Masirah Island between April and October, when camping activities and turtle nesting seasons attract both domestic and international visitors.

These seasonal patterns have made ferry services an important part of supporting tourism and regional mobility.

As part of its development strategy, the National Ferries Company is implementing several projects aimed at improving service quality and operational efficiency.

The company is upgrading and rehabilitating some of its existing vessels while also working with Asyad Drydock to build a new ferry dedicated to transporting passengers and vehicles.

Officials said the planned addition will support future expansion, enhance maritime service standards and improve the overall travel experience for users.

With demand for sea transport continuing to grow, Oman’s National Ferries Company is positioning itself to strengthen connectivity across the country while supporting economic development and tourism through modern and efficient maritime services.
